Regular Operating Temps?

Wanted to know guys whats normal operating temps? And what temps do you guys hit when on the track? Mainly Autox as i know your constantly in the higher RPM range. Reason i ask i hit 220F yesterday and thought that was quite warm. Am i wrong?

its an 88 FC Turbo
S5 motor with GT35R Dual ballbearing turbo
FD oil bypass pellet

I think the thermostats open at around 180-190, so that's "normal". The closer to that, the better. As to what's "too hot" it depends on where you're measuring it (before or after rad, in the sump vs. after the cooler) and it depends on who you talk to.

There's a thermostat in the oil cooler as well, I think it opens at around 180-190, hence my post where I said thermostats. Where are you measuring it? 220's not terrible, it's certainly warmer than normal, but not really at a level to be concerned about yet.

Oil tends to run a little warmer than the water. About 30F warmer (or more). While I don't have a temp gauge on my oil, 250F would *not* be considered out of the ballpark on the track (from what I have read and seen). What was your water temp?

usually 260ish

That's too hot, especially if you're taking your temperatures after the cooler. Racing Beat says that you should never allow the oil temp entering the engine to exceed 205F. Also see here:

my water temps usually range around 190 while running hard oil temps can reach about 220 the temp sensor is on a RE speed oil pedestal..

Autox on 96f day:

Water temps: 215f at the tstat
Oil Temps: 215f at the input line, so probably a high of 240f or so at the tstat.

Track days: much cooler - the first lap or two taken somewhat slow to get the car up to temp

Cool down lap on the last track day I did the water temps were 180f.

Ambient temp was 70f

This is with a Koyo dual pass rad in a vmount setup and dual 19 row Mocal coolers.

Oil Temps

My strictly track car rarely goes beyond 230 on oil, however I've found that measuring EGT's ( exhaust gas temps) to be more reliable as to what's going on within the rotor housings. I'm running between 1200 and 1300 degrees just 6" downstream from the exhust port. The sensitivity of the EGT probes gives you almost instant feedback.
