Racing Harness in '85 GSL-SE?

First year autoX'er, doing it with my 85 GSL-SE, want to put seat harness's in it, wife is going to ride along, so putting two in, wondering who has put a harness in a first gen before and what'd you use, how did you attach?

I'm thinking 4 point, and use the sunroof tie down bolt in the back to bolt the rear of the harness to. I'm racing in the stock class, so a cross bar between the rear shock towers I believe would be illegal.

Thanks for comments in advance

"use the sunroof tie down bolt in the back to bolt the rear of the harness to"

I have a GSL-SE for my street car, and I am not familiar with the bolt you refer to. What diameter is it? What will be the angle from the harness back to the bolt?

just a warning: poorly designed harness mounting points are much worse than using the stock safely engineered seat belts.

In the rear, there are the straps to hold the sunroof if you remove it from the top of the car. The straps are bolted down to the floor of the storage area, you dont see them because the carpet/padding covers them up. The bolts are not very long, it would take longer bolts to work, but no drilling would be necessary. The bolt holes almost line up dead center behind each seat.

I understand about the angle issue, the shoulder straps would come over the tops of the seat at maybe a 25 degree angle, more than proper for this sort of thing.

I found a picture on this site where someone had put 2 harnesses in...one harness was a 4 point using 1 rear bolt, the other harness was a 3 point using one bolt as well. They didn't use the sunroof bold, they drilled the floor and put a new bolt in.

Just looking for ideas or feedback of whats work/hasn't worked.

thanks all

A bar between the shock towers may be illegal, but I can't see a harness bar being illegal (something designed only to mount harnesses to....) ...Mount the harnesses right, or don't mount them at all... (or die... )

Oh, and you may want to look at 5+ point harnesses, I've seen what a misplaced lap belt can do to the human body and it is not pretty...

13.2 - H: A horizontal “harness bar” may be used as part of the installation
hardware for allowed driver restraints. It may serve no other
purpose (e.g., structural enhancement).
