racing harness?
 

hi guys, new here. =)

i just bought a 89 turbo II to autoX in the western washington series (which starts next week...). naturally, the seatbelts are worthless and i would like to put a harness in. rules are it has to be non-structural to stay in the stock class. any suggestions where to attach the cross bar?

oh and if anybody has any 16X7 wheels for sale, lemme know =)

Make or buy something that will attach to the bolt holes that the stock shoulder harnesses go to. Make sure they are above your shoulder height though, don't want to compress your spine when you tighten them up.

thx man. i haven't actually torn into it yet, but i didn't think that it would have those attach points, since i have the automatic shoulder belts. is that going to be a problem?

Here is what I did, I was never protested, but this was at a regional level. I used the shoulder belt attachment bolt for the REAR seat. I made a harness bar out of 1-1/4 rigid conduit.
- remove the trim
- you will be measuring metal to metal. - locate the rear shoulder belt mounting holes
- you will want to orient the bar so that the ears on the harness bar are rearword of the bar(thus preventing the rotation of the bar forward typical with Porsche Harness bars, but do search, and look at those for design ideas)
- measure the distance between the two holes, note that the body is concave as you move forward from the holes.
- using 3/16 weldable plate you will be cutting a tear drop shape with the largest part of that shape welded to the bar(the ear) Now you will begin fitting, essentialy you will determine the total length needed, an then subtract the plate thickness from the overall length of the bar. you will want the bar to be a little bit shorter than you think, so first cut the bar long(around1/2"), gradually shorten th bar so that you can fit it in its final home.
- once this is done, cut ~1/2" of an inch off the bar. the end result will be a bar that is short enough tomanipulate into place, but that is long enough that a 5lb sledge is needed for final placement.
- you will need to use your original shoulder belt bolts to secure the bar, drill a hole just large enough for these bolts in the smaller end of the teardrop shaped ear
- weld the ears to the bar taking great care with both penetration, and same placement of both ears.
- Ideally, bolt the ears to the car, and then cut the pipe, sledge it into place, and the weld. That way it will be perfect.
- you will have to bend the ears since the body is concave.
- THIS IS WHAT I DID FOR MY CAR, IT IS NOT RECOMENDED THAT IT BE DUPLICATED, IT IS ONLY AN ILLUSTRATION OF ONE WAY TO MOUNT A BAR IN A CAR FOR SHOW, AND AS SUCH SHOULD NOT BE RELIED UPON TO RESTRAIN A PERSON IN A MOVING VEHICAL.
