Racing to bring new Mazda Power?
Hi all,I was thinking with Mazda NA as well as MazdaSpeed's heavy involvement in both the 3 rotor in Grand AM as well as the new turbocharged 4 banger in The BK motorsports ALMS car does anyone think that Mazda is testing to see which or possibly both powerplants can be used in future roadgoing cars??
It's always great to be driving Mazda's on the track and this year is a great year to be a fan of Mazda in professional sports car racing. Oh yeah, and Mazda, please bring back a kick ass 7 for all us diehards. Lets here what you think...... Jim 1 |
I think if anything we'll get another compromise car like the RX-8.

As far as I know the only rotary engine that company still gets contingency is the RX-8 but if you look at both Pettit Racing and Tri-Point they are racing the Mazda6 which pays more. I may not be repeating it exacly how I heard it, but that is pretty close to what I was told by Tri-Point.

I don't think Mazda or Mazdaspeed is heavily involved with either, other than writing checks. Not a chance will we ever see either of those engines in a street car. The 3 rotor is based on 20 year old technology at this point, there is nothing new there. The AER motor is one of their own design with a Mazda sticker on the side. I doubt a Mazda engineer has ever seen the inside of one.

But I get your point - I don't think that we're going to see any 'Vette-killers coming out of Mazda in the forseeable future. I think that we will continue to see some great sports-cars come out of them, but not another FD, at least not for now. -b |

I agree with you about the 20 Y.O. technology for the 3 rotor but look at G.M and the Corvette. The Z06 is one of the best track cars on the planet and the pushrod isn't exactly new. Heck the even won LeMans overall with speed and reliablity.
I still can't believe Mazda is not going to make a 7 again.I mean look at this forum and all the activity here as well as passion for a long deceased mark. I have driven the RX8 and liked it.I even like the way it looks,it needs to have some balls to get me to buy one. I mean i would at least like to hang with that Braun razor look alike NissanZ on the straights :) |
+1 on the vette being old technology, even if it was OHC it would be old technology. Several WW2 era tanks and airplanes had all aluminum DOHC V8's V10's V12's. Each successive generation just makes the same old technology work a little better, lighter, more power, beter QA etc.
Hopefully the next rotary will be FI with with beter design details everywhere, and GDI, having with more than 2 rotors at least as an option would be nice. The only way we will see a Vette beater is if mazda does a very limited production sports car that will be very expensive to pay for itself at such a low production rate, like a mazda version of the NSX.

mazda's oficial future plans:
(4) Rotary engines - Introduce a new generation gasoline rotary engine with enhanced power and fuel efficiency toward the start of the decade beginning in 2010. http://rotarynews.com/node/view/892 they are going to have this engine ready for 2010, thats for a new car, some very well conected people have told me is a second gen rx-8 but I am willing to bet is going in light 2 seater based on the Kabura concept, maybe even both? |
I'd love to see this new technoloy close the gap between piston and rotary engine efficency.

Thanks for the update rotary crazy. I met Berny at the pits in Daytona,he is a nice guy. Things hopefully will continue to look up for us in the Mazda camp. Jim

"The AER motor is one of their own design with a Mazda sticker on the side"... umm no.

actually as an option you can contact a company that work through mazda speed and get a 3rotor put in your car. also do some searching on yahoo or google and you can find pics of the second gen Rx-8 looks nice as hell id say. looks like they mashed the kabrau and the Rx-8 desgin with something else throw in to make it.

Thanks for the reply and info racerjason.Good Stuff. We will have to see how they do this weekend?? I think ALMS is this weekend? I also think it is a street course which i usually detest more than getting a root canal. Jim

I have a little request from you guys, please go to rotarynews.com and leave a massage to the guys from speedsource Im sure they will appreciated |
racerjason, they also said the 3rotor was renesis based, which was a complete lie. I saw an earlier article that mentioned the Mazda-AER 4 cylinder was basically half of their V8. This makes sense to me as they were planning on direct injecting the v8 in the near future. I guess it's possible they are using Mazda's system, but given the extremely short development time I'd say it's highly unlikely that the new motor has anything Mazda on it at all, more likely they went with what they were already developing for the V8...
|
"racerjason, they also said the 3rotor was renesis based, which was a complete lie" ummm no. White lie yes, complete; no. The 3-rotor did use RX8 technology. If anyone wants to continue second guessing me then I'll post copies of my annual hard cards from the ALMS, Champcar, and SCCA Pro. I have a good idea of what's going on.
|
It did have some things from the renesis, but very little
The BK engine its an AER, the engine that has some mazda parts in it will debut lather in the season, as allways the people from BK are in a hurry and dont wait for development |
afther 2 DNF they must be questioning theyr decicion, the AER engine cars allways have a lot of mechanical problems, they should have gone 4 rotor
