Puck clutch shifting technique
 

I noticed something strange yesterday, or maybe it was just strange to me. When I had the car in motion, in any gear, if I barely put any pressure on the clutch pedal during shifts and shift fast, the resulting upshift would be ridiculously smooth. It's like I gas, ease off the gas, tap the clutch, switch to the next gear, release the clutch, and ease into the gas again and everytime I do it right, I'm rewarded with a smooth upshift. Now my street disc never did that before. I'm wondering if this phenomenon is restricted to puck discs only, and also, if this type of shifting eat my clutch, or synchro's or something else? It's enjoyable and fast to do, but I'd rather not do it, if it's eating something in my car.

I noticed this a bit when I went to my sprung puck as well.

I think the reduced pedal stroke is because the puck lacks the marcel spring an organic disc will have you get a clean immediate release of the clutch friction surface from the flywheel and PP surface.


Less clutch mass also provides easier engagement as well and this is noticed as easier and faster shifting.

that just means that u havent learnt to shift smoothly... if you match ti right, shouldnt matter if its a puck or not when u get a smooth shift..

the point of the post is, with the puck, I don't have to rev match to get a smooth shift. I haven't tried an as-fast-as you can downshift yet, but I will in the next day or two when I take my car out for a ride. On an upshift though, from first to second, if I just shift as quick as I can, there' no time for the revs to drop before the next gear is engaged. However, with the puck clutch, I'm still rewarded with a smooth shift, as opposed to when I had a street disc, the clutch would use the engine's leftover revs to shoot the car forward.

I find it interesting that the puck clutch will grab the revs down from gear to gear if not properly rev matched, like the example i gave before, but for some reason, the car doesn't behave like the engine and transmission are rev mismatched, it just goes along smoothly. It's just as smooth as if I do wait for the revs to drop to the correct amount between first and second before engaging second. There's literally no shift shock.

i have a sprung 6 puck and i've experienced the same thing but i'm still having trouble launching smoothly. sometimes the clutch engages smoothly and other times it chatters then grabs hard. it doesn't chatter as bad as when i first installed it 1000 miles ago so im hoping the chatter will go away completely with more use.

I find that the chatter increases with use.

Same with me. I have the SPEC Stage 4 6puck and when shifting i dont have to push the clutch all the way in, just until i feel it releases, which is only about 5 inches.

I get smooth shift with pushing the pedal 1/4 way.

It shiftes faster bc there is less weight on the input shaft and it allows things to slow down quicker and go into gear smoother..
