Polycarbonate on Carbon Fiber Sealant Question
I am trying to figure out the best sealant for a Lexan polycarbonate window on a carbon fiber hatch.
I am leaning towards 3Ms Window Weld Super Fast Urethane (PN#08609), and mechanically fastening it down with bolts, lock washers, and nylon nuts. I just want to ensure the sealant will be holding strong between the polycarbonate and carbon fiber, and not just the nuts and bolts. I called 3M and this question stumped them. I believe they are putting their best scientists on the case, but I know I've seen this combination on a few RX-7s before. Any help would be greatly appreciated Cheers! |
I found a few members used black RTV and butyl caulking as sealants
Any feedback with long term use with these options? |
I think window weld will be ample - that stuff is serious.

I'm really hoping the seal holds strong; FALs rear polycarbonate windows are now obsolete due to a damaged mold, so a replacement will be hard to come by Here's what I'm working with. The manufacturer put 8 mount guides on the hatch template, so the hardware install should be pretty straight forward https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3679/1...004c96cd_h.jpg Good luck with your hill climb FC - maybe I'll see you at a local event :icon_tup: |
I went with 3M Window-Weld (#08609) with 10 1" 10/32 head allen screws with nylon lock nuts

Thanks for the compliment and for your help Dave

I will be doing this myself shortly as Ive had the hatch and window laying around for a while now, just want to get the hatch painted first. Did you reattach interior plastics to the inside of the hatch?
|
No, I didn't reattach the factory plastics - only the two hinge brackets up top and the latch hook at the back
