Please help! People with cages...
 

Im gonna need my fellow members help

Im going to be putting a roll cage in my car and in florida its hard to come by an engineer that is depandable for time and that can get work done when he says. I did however find this guy today that is ready for the car on tuesday and says he will have the car finished in 7 days.

here is what he is doing.

Basic 6pt roll cage
thru firewall to front struts then from front struts to chassis
Nascar style side protection with dual tubbing
Cutting out and gutting doors
Mount my Brake and clutch overhung assembly
Mount my sterring column
Mount my Race seat with brackets
Mount my Saefty Harness Tabs
Mount 4 gallon Dry sump Tank
Cut out and mount 22 gallon fuel cell.

all this for 3500.00 and guaranteed done in 7 days.

Please tell me what you guys think.

as for work, the man has an awsome eye for welding. very consistant and very artistic welds..

Try and find some former customers and see what they say. Sounds like a lot of work for seven days. Geez, even God took a day off after six! Seriously ask if he has done road racing cars before and is familiar with what is involved. I had a friend go to a drag racing guy to have a cage put into a BMW M-coupe. When he got it back it looked like a NHRA pro-stock door slammer. He took it to the first race and they told him to "fix" it for the next race. Remember you get what you pay for... I would charge closer to $5k for that much work. Installing the cell is $1k alone. BTW I just so happen to be doing a FD cage now also.

$1k to install a cell?! Jesus, I need to start working for you -- and I'll work for kicks to Matt's groin! :crackup:

Though I will admit working with AN line is sometimes not worth that an hour...

How are you doing a 6 PT cage that goes through the fire wall to hit the front struts?
Unless the guy is coked out and on meth and has a partner working wth him in the same ondition, that much work will not get done in 7 days, for $3500.
Why are you getting a cage? It is going to be built ot a specific ruleset? (SCCA? NHRA?) make sure you know what you are getting before you let him touch your car.

Putting a cell in a car CORRECTLY is a ton of work. Fittings, cover, heat shields... If I could live with myself doing what I've seen on other cars, yes it might cost less, but think about the dynamics of a FD cell for a moment. This is a thirsty car so you will need a 22 gal cell at a minimum. 22x~7lbs per gal of gas = 154lbs + 40# (the weight of the cell and mounting) = close to 200# of weight in the trunk. Are you going to hold that down with drywall screws? It better be pretty beefy. I have seen more then one back yard installed cell fall out of a car. One going down a straight and then he dragged it for two laps!

BTW Matt doesn't know about this site, lets keep it that way...

The tank im putting in is a 22 gal cell, going to be used for a 13b pp still deciding weather to go EFI or carb. I will Follow thru the work as it gets done and keep you guys posted as the work gets completed. As for the 7 Days. Im not really concentrated on the work being done in just that amount of time. lets say he takes 2 weeks, i think thats reasonable for the amount of work that he has to do.

I guess the FD presents a challenge I didn't know of for mounting a cell... believe me, I've removed my fair share of "almost making contact with the ground" fuel cells. ;)

I'm in Miami, and might be able to reccomend some options if you would like.

The price and timeframe is a total bargain, but I would question any guy who would promise to that much work in that little time. My cage took about a month to get done, because it was done at a shop with a good reputation and lots of other work. 7 days is definatelly doable for a cage if he works straight through only on your car, but now a cage and everything else might be pushing it a bit.

try to talk to his other customers, and see some of his work beforehand, because this is something you definatelly dont want to scrimp on. If eveything checks out consider yourself lucky to be getting a pretty damn good deal.....and hell PM me his contact info too ;)

NASApro7 is right; a basic 6 point cage does not go thru the firewall; that is an 8 point cage. Make sure the cage meets SCCA GT or Production car rule book specs, then it will be legal where ever you go to race.

the reason i say basic 6 point is because the other guy i was orginally talking to priced it that way. but yes, it is an 8pt cage. i have spoken to 2 other customers of his and seen to other cars he has done. Beautiful work and they had nothing but good to say about the fabricator. I have decided to take the car this afternoon. i will post progress and let you know how this goes.
