What class are you building to - ITS, EP, ITE? ITS won't allow the flywheel or tranny but you will need a 5.12 rear - good luck finding one though. ITE or EP will allow those mods though. Miata gears in an RX-7 box is an option, but not for ITS. Any of these will go in NASA PT.
ISC used to modify/lengthen the pinion gears. They are the ones who did my 4.88 rear. Did they stop doing this? Is the 5.12 gear not available anymore? |
You can still get them done, its just getting hard to find somebody who specializes in them.
You are correct though, the pinion just needs to be lengthened. Any machine shop can do that part for you. The rest is pretty easy if you have set up a rear end before. |
Well I wanted to run a 12a tranny...because its a cheap gear upgrade. But they won't allow that in IT.
I am planning to run ITA because it is by far the cheapest class to run in. I'm not sure if I'll have enough power to compete in that class with the S4 engine, but we'll see. -Vincent. |
FC = ITS, 13B FB = ITS as well, only the 12A 1st gens are ITA.
I'd agree, I've got similiar spring rates and street drive my car a lot and I don't feel that it's too soft for the track and I wouldn't want to go stiffer on the street. If it wasn't for the track, I'd be running a much softer setup. |

Different tracks favor different setups. 400/250 is a good starting point, and you can test and tweak from there. Like SCCAITS pointed out, it's his "third suspension". Also, it you are going to drive to the track, you probably don't want to run anything stiffer than this. Your spine will thank you. ISC has built a lot of winning cars, so you could do a lot worse than listening the them. Just be aware that they are trying to sell you their own stuff, so their solution may not be the cheapest. Also, if you intend to eventually go race door-to-door, make sure that you pay attention to the mods allowed in the different classes (NASA or SCCA). You don't want to spend a lot of $$ and time on mods that you have to remove later. Good luck, -bill Agreed, it's my 2nd suspension, I started with the standard 400/275. It worked ok for me but I found in some situations I needed more. Frankly I'd have run 400s at Sears and 500s at Thunderhill, but I never was THAT serious about racing to get into suspension tweaks for a specific track. I focused more on getting more out of my own skills and making sure the car was solid. |
Well I got my engine fired back up this morning! Haven't bolted up the exhaust so it was rather loud...lol. I am waiting on my huge radiator and electric fan setup to arrive next week. As well as a few other tidbits of stuff.
It was good to see her crank back up on the first try!!! I think I am going to go with the Falken Azenis 615 205/50/15 tire for my vert wheels...I think that's about as agressive as I can get and still drive to the track. And at 67 dollars a piece plus shipping they are a steal! -Vincent. |
