oopinions on ebc gren stuff brake pads
 
hi i was looking at getting these for my car, i plan to road race it once every 2 months and want a pad i can run on the street and not have to change for the track. supposedly they dont dust very bad and are street pads does anyone know how they hold up??

They are a very good "dustless" street pad. They will never fade on you, even on the track, BUT they only last~1 hour +/- under race conditios. The EBC Reds last a little longer, but same comments. I would say Carbotech Panthers as a dual use pad, or XPs as a track pad. The XPs are fantastic, but have to be warm to work. Personally I would avoid all the Hawk pads for your application. There are some performance Friction pads that are very good, but $$$, and I prefer the XPs. Carl

If you are Serious about the track - Then use track specific pads - If you mus drive the car to the track Change them at the track, it only takes 15 min once you do it a couple times. Just use compatible pads (like Hawk HPS for the street & Hawk Blue for the track or Carbotech Panther&XP, etc.) so you don't have to resurface the rotors each time! I also found that EBC Green's, while very grippy and fade resistant only last one day at the track (in my case approx 80 min, in 4 20 min sessions at Streets of Willow Springs took them from new to less than 15% remaining) I did 3 20min sessions at Buttonwillow (full course cw) w/ Hawk HPS that had been used 5k mi on the street and still had 50-60% pad left however they did fade after 3-4 hard laps requiring 2 cool down laps in the middle of a 20min session. :(

The worst pads I have ever put on my rx7. I find no gains over stock pads imo and they don't last. Mine were worn to the metal in justunder 2,000 miles of street use. Yes I do drive hard but not that hard.

EBC Greenstuffs from Tire Rack. Great pads for street and open track events. The Greenstuffs have excellent bite when warmed up, and are pretty much fade free when used within their operating temps. Overheat them, and like any pad material, the Greenstuffs will fade. Greenstuffs have sharpened my use of the brakes; I use them SPARINGLY--just enough to slow the car for turn-in.

On the street, the Greenstuffs hardly dust at all, and provide good cold bite.

If you plan to open-track every other month, the Greenstuffs will work fine for you.

My other suggestion is the stock Sumitomo '99 Type RS/RZ brake pads from Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development. Similar performance to the Greenstuffs. I've found that each pad leaves a slightly different pad film, so you might get some pad shudder (during open-track) when switching between Greenstuffs and Sumitomo Type RS pads.

Please note my opinion comes from my experience with '99 Type RS brake rotors and calipers all around on my FD3S. Other opinions may vary based on the FD3S owner's braking system compononents (such as stock US spec FD3S calipers/rotors, or upgraded front brake rotors/calipers only with stock US spec rears).

I have the Greenstuffs in my circle track Honda, I got them because a pad that has to heat up is uesless to me as I don't have time to warm them before they have to be used. They stop better than OEM and I have had no complaints. Mine lasted all season just fine but they are all short races.

i really like all of EBC's pads. i run the greens on the street and one click up from them for track days. the greens, like any high performance street pad, can be made to fade at the track. no surprise. for fast street performance they stop right now, make no noise or dust and your rotor looks like a million bucks. i have had no wear problems with them on the stock front or the AP setup that i have run for the last few years.

300ZX is 3500 lbs with brake rotors same sized as US spec FD3S. This means the rotors need to heat sink 750 lbs more momentum. That extra weight translates into more heat, which will melt most any brake pad material. Your friend needs 14-inch diameter x 3-inch thick brake rotors to help with heat sinking all that kinetic energy :)

didn't like the EBCs at all. Ate through them on on an open track event under medium braking. I put in HP+ and I love them, although I haven't run them on a track event yet.

Red Stuffs were junk. Ran through them in a day @ an open-track event. Green Stuffs were much better.

Looks like the opinions differ so much, that you'll just have to try EBCs for yourself, and draw your own conclusions...

Manni, I am suprised at your experience(red vs green). Given the no fade, I wonder how the "endurance pads" would do from EBC? Moving forardv I have never heard bad about the panthers, only that some felt PF was better. My rotors are perfect after three full weekends(~2.5hrs/weekend), and I have almost no rotor wear, and still have 65%+ pads. As I said, I can out brake an occasional track day guy easily in my FC, VS his 2003 996TT, and I can easily brake with a 03 ZO6(experienced) from ~130 to 50. Carl

Dunno, maybe I had a bad batch? Roasted the Red Stuffs down to the backing plate. It was ugly! Also tried the CB Panther Plusses. Nice pads, until the price increase :(
