NHRA rules for battery in trunk

I know the rules says I must have a sealed box if I want to have the battery in trunk. My question is if it can be custom fabricated. The boxes I've seen are just way too big for the battery I have, probably twice as big as I need it. Is it against the rules to have a custom fabricated one, does it have to be NHRA approved?

Battry Box

I have a brand new, in the box, MOROSO( nhra) aproved box for sale. This is the blue one in the catalog pictures. It for a type 24 battry. I need a much bigger one to help meet the weight requirement. Measures 10"x12"x9" deep. Jegs price is $90+. I'll take $60.00 and postage is free. Let me know.

the thing is my battery is only like 6x7x3.5. It's a small battery and I want to keep it that way. Thanks for the offer though, I might know someone else that wants it's so I might be in touch

BATTERY BOX

I don't know about NHRA, but all other groups that I deal with, do not reguire a battery box with a gel type battery. Only requirement is to be properly tied down. I don't understand why you would want a lite weight battery in a drag car. Weight over the right rear tire is what you need. Many drag racers use two batterys. One to run on and one to start on.

You can make your own battery box.
I think NHRA rules is 0.040" thick aluminum or equivalent "baffle".
It needs to be sealed and vented to the outside.

The sticker is if the battery relocation is not stock for the vehicle (i.e. Miatas have batteries in the back), you need to run a battery AND alternator cut-off switch in the rear.

Dick, I'll take that battery box if it is still available. Thanks, Carl Byck 707-696-2705

put me 2nd in line after Carl.

You don't need it for road racing Carl if you run a sealed battery (Optima). It is only needed to meet NHRA rules.
