Newbie SCCA Autocross classification ???
 

I'm too stupid to figure out the SCCA classification rules. I have a '94 touring that I have enjoyed taking to the local autocross events. I'm a truly terrible driver at this point. In our local club I'm running as Novice, but for the regional SCCA series I thought I would enter in an appropriate class. I just have a hard time figuring out what that would be. I could use some help.

As near as I can tell, there are only three options for the FD; SS, ASP, and SM2. Am I correct so far?

Currently, my FD is altered from stock in these ways:
- Brembo drilled and slotted rotors
- Greddy intake
- Downpipe
- 18x8.5 wheels
- MS short throw shifter
- Bonez high-flow cat
- Racing Beat Dual tip catback
- Greddy strut brace
- '99 spec front bumper.
- Non OEM rear bushings

Given those rather mild mods, it seems like it puts me into ASP or SM2. In my region, it is looking like very few folks run SM2 and they don't seem to be all that fast. Lots of folks run in ASP and they are beating me by 10 seconds. Again, much of that is because I simply can't drive, but a lot of it is obvious when I see how quickly they accelerate out of an element.

I have a set of stock tires with rubber on them. I have a stock airbox I could put in. I'm never going to be competitive in any car, let alone my FD. But does anyone have any recommendations on the class that I should run in and what "reasonable" changes I should make to accomplish it?

The 99 front bumper puts you in SM2, the other mods you list are ASP legal. I doubt you would want to change your bumper so just run SM2. Read the rules for the class as to what you can mod, but it is pretty much open rules wise. If you look up my thread in this section here you can see all the stuff I have done to run SM2.

Yeah, I read that thread. It is amazing the build up you are doing on your FD. I'd love to be able to watch you run it someday. Too bad you're not in the PNW. I'm one of the slowest at each event, but I think my FD is one of the best looking. Of course, so far mine is the only FD I've seen at an event. :)

Since you are in WA, you should try to make it to one of the events at Packwood.

Awesome course - 36 acres of (mostly) smooth unobstructed pavement.

I have been racing my Miata there the past 2 years. I will have my FD there later this year in SM2 for Oregon SCCA events.
