New to Suspension setups, Few questions
 

So for the past year ive been running borrowed Stance Gr coilovers and have been using them to drift. Ive played with their damper settings and really saw that depending on the condition of road i could gain quite a bit of grip. One of my good friends road races his miata in an open class and he runs Ohlins coils on it and he says its an awesome setup.

granted hes been racing for quite awhile. They are able to keep his supercharged NB miata planted and are very streetable. anyways, ive been very interested into transitioning out of drifting and going roadracing. starting with just lapping days.

From everything ive gathered on various threads it seems 80% coilovers out there are mostly garbage for this application because they all use cheap valving or so it seems. And ive come to the realization that most people have become accustomed to the idea "Super stiff and Slammed" means sporty when after seeing his miata it couldnt be anymore wrong.

Apologies for the long story but im interested in making my own setup with Bilstein HD Struts, Eibach springs and some camber plates. Does anyone have any experience with these? From what i understand they can be re-valved fairly cheap and i can get them for a decent price. It does however say the struts need to be modified but doesnt say what exactly. They are 30mm but isnt that stock sizing?:scratch:

Ok ive seem to answer my question regarding modifying. It just meant removing the insert. :facepalm:

in order to get normal bilsteins to handle super stiff springs, you'll have to revalve them. They're also probably a bit long for going moderately low.

you could also build a set of coilovers like this:

or buy some AWR housings and put koni 8610s in them:

ive read that bbb thread. where i got my motivation lol. do you know off the top of your head what spring rate the bulsteins can handle off the shelf? its going to be daily driven and used roughly 4 times a month at the track. as far as height goes im not looking to be as low as i used to be. looking for a functional low lol. its not important anymore though.

both me and josh18_2k are running 600 lbs/in springs in the front just fine, but I'd say that's close to the maximum. you could probably get away with 700s.

I'd start off with something like a 400/275 or 500/350 setup for DDing and see how you like it and go from there. Spring rates are super dependent on the person. I run 600/500 currently and it's fine on the street.

we've played with a bunch of different spring rates and shocks over the years, and the shock is the primary impact on ride quality.

in the bunch of cars, we've got a stock vert, and a gtus with koni's and 400/250 springs, and the car with the koni's delivers a nicer ride than stock.

400/250 is a good combo to start with, or 450/275 or 350/225-250, any of those gets you in the ballpark enough so you can play with all the other details before you look for that last .02 second with spring rates

Alright I just bit the bullet and ordered the sleeves and struts. Going to try and use some spare strut housings i have. Ill post an update as the pieces come in :)
