New additions to my cage, final prep stages...

I dropped in to CSC Racing this morning to check on progress with my car. I left it with them last week to add some extra protection, features, etc.

First they added a new diagonal to my main roll hoop which I was indifferent to adding but what the heck. They also cleaned up the weld from my original diagonal which was not perfect and in fact moisture had appeares dripping out of pin hole.

Second they welded a selection of seams in the engine compartment.

Thirdly they added a variety of gussets and cleaned up a couple of my *cough* welds.

And finally we test fit the seat and gave consideration to floor reinforcement and the range of adjustment I wanted in the seat.

What do you guys think of the height of the drivers side door bars? I'm considering adding one more on top or a diagonal from the center of the stack to the main hoop below my shoulder. Either way it's going to be a bitch if I have to do a timed egress test as the seat and wheel position will be fairly close. More pics as work progresses if anyone cares to see....

Cheers, Jason

What class is this going to run?

The driver side bar looks to be at about the same height mine is. A diagonal might be cool but that would make it quite a bitch to get in and out. I like my rear diagonal that ties the main hoop drivers side to the passenger side rear brace bottom. It should help in a drivers side impact.

CASC Regional Sprints, typically 20-40 minute races here in Ontario, would like to venture to Mid-O and the Glen with it though.

The rule is that your door bars must be at least 1/3rd the height measured from the floorpan to inside the roof, and it does that. Just figure that once the coilovers are on the top of that bar will be pretty low, we'll see I guess.

I like your diagonal from the rear. Nice touch.

I'll have pics up tomorrow of the reinforced floor and seat mount.

Where are the bumpers of your competitors? That's about where your door bars should go.

What sort of rules does that class allow? Sounds like a fun car, love to see any more pics you have of it, similar to the car Iwant to build someday.

haha, I have the same steering wheel

That would be satisfactory but I've tech'd enough cars and seen enough wrecks that I'd prefer above average protection.

Thanks, I'm building it to scare myself more than anything! I will update this thread with pics as progress warrants. As for rules and structure of the series you can read about it here:

Really? Suede wrapped model 129's are scarce, congrats! I would have liked a Personal model in honor of Senna but they're hard to come by.

Okay, the seat is mounted...

Pretty standard as far as mounting goes. They plasma'd in to the factory seat mounts and welded in angle steel then mounted the aluminum plates to it.

The seating position... I'm going to fool with the pedals a bit for sure.

Dropped off my FC2000 RE bumper for them to look at dzus fastening possibilities so the nose and splitter will be quick release for easy trailering...

Next week it will be the window net and driver right-side net, stay tuned!

CJarrett 09-26-08 07:05 PM

Looks great, pretty much how I want to build as well. Are you doing much of the work yourself?

IAN 09-28-08 07:29 PM

Awesome. Can't wait to see it next year! Get her done.

O ya and about those lug nuts. I will like a set as well. The ones we were talking about at mosport this weekend. (Were do you get them?)

Looks great Jason!

I'll get you some pics of the engine this week.

Thank you. The cage was put in by a friend and myself over four days. I will have done the majority of the work upon completion. The engine I'm leaving in the knowledgable hands of RPM because I simply don't have the time.

Ian I'll PM you about the lugs, I'll double check a price with them today (they're in Hamilton).

And not much of an update but...

Lower fastening point for the right-side arm net:

A view of the right-side arm net with the dash mocked up in the background. Dzus mounts are being put in for it:

The Tach is tentatively to be mounted on the steering column and will be clearly visible through the wheel.

More over the next 8-10 days. Cheers, Jason

It is impressing. How much you need to spend on job like this one?

RacerJason 10-08-08 12:12 PM

I'll have sunk $10 to $12K in once all is said and done this spring, but that is cutting very few corners... and I got the car for free...

More updates this Saturday including final dash fitment, FC 2000 quick release front end, and engine prep/porting pics from RPM.

Nice. Nik and I were looking into building an FC as well. But I think the moons will have to align.

The big problem is moving the vehicle.

It's not a cheap venture.

Jason, it looks great. Just a word of advice on your seating position. If the driver is above average height, the location of the upper roll hoop above the drivers door to the drivers head will be very close. I had to lay my seat back and cut into the tranny tunnel to get enough room for me to fit properly. Moving the pedals is also a very tricky issue. I moved mine 1/2" to the right and the wheel 1" to the right to line up with my new seating position. It was a ton of work.

Ian/ Nik PM me. My RX is just sitting and is available to the right people to use. Pictures in case you forgot what it looks like.

If it's not too late, I'd add another door bar on the driver and maybe passenger side that runs into the dash bar. If that height is too high for ingress/egress, the builder should be able to tilt it so that its only a few inches above the top bar already in the car, but terminates into the dash bar. Might not make that much of a difference, but right now the existing door bars are a dead load path into the a-pillar tube and main hoop.

Silkworm 10-27-08 06:11 PM

Agreed Eric, my car we ended up having to extensively shape the trans tunnel to make enough room for my head with helmet without having to worry about it banging on the A-pillar bar. I'm not super tall (5'10") but it was definitely a concern for me.

Jason,

Cage looks fine, my door bars are a smidge higher, but I'd say you're well protected even at your height. Not sure what the point of gusseting those uprights was though. I'd much rather see gussets on your main hoop diagonal and your halo bar up top.

Your seat seems awefully upright to me, is it comfortable like that?

PaulC

thetech 10-27-08 06:27 PM

Your side bar is alot lower than mine...takes a little while to get used to, but grab the front hoop and jump/pull yourself in and it's relatively easy:

RacerJason 10-28-08 07:51 AM

Thanks guys, she's coming home in the next day or two and I'll have an update then. And yes I was a little disappointed with their "gussets" when I saw the end product. I had envisioned nice dimple-holed gussets in a few strategic locations not wee L's. I'll have the ability to do some fine tuning of the setup once I'm settled back at home.

RacerJason 12-03-08 09:15 PM

And the window net is in...

http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/5...ture001jo2.jpg

Actually cool, and a first that I've seen. They installed it so there is not one perm. fastened point. You unlatch the buckle and it can/will drop away completely for easy egress...

To fill a request for some more pictures of my seat mounting...

Dzus receivers installed, seven in total across the rad support and one each from a custom mount ahead of the fenders...

And how the FC2000 bumper cover aligns with its Dzus fastners...

More when I'm done my Xmas shopping :D

Long overdue update...

Molding and modifying of Corksport overfenders. I'm planning on making fiberglass copies once their completed.
