The New AS

Where are all the FDs? If this has already been discussed, I missed it but...

I'm a current autocross competitor considering a move to a stock class car for next season. Since I'm only really looking for plans for one season, I'm considering an FD in the could be dead end new AS. The Cayman certainly hasn't seemed fast. Is the non Z06 Vette really that fast?

I'm surprised we haven't seen more FDs this season.

Also, I'm interested in a stock r1...someone must have one lying around? :) Maybe the answer to my question is hard it seems to find an unmolested car.

The Z06 is that fast.

Step 1: Buy this > https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-rx-7-1993-2002-vehicles-107/very-reluctant-post-1993-cym-49k-miles-100%25-bone-stock-mint-889168/

Step 2: Out drive the faster Z06s.

Good luck :icon_tup:

When did FD's move to a-stock?

I think they could dominate A stock if you could find a strong stock with zero mods.

SprockettAW11 08-29-10 12:04 PM

Some of you may not be aware but this year, the old AS becamse BS and the old BS and CS were somewhat merged. The new AS is now comprised of a bunch of previous also rans from SS...the RX7TT is one car that was moved down. Others included hte non Z06 C5 and pre LSD Porsche Cayman/Boxter S.

The class has so far proven a failure by most measures but is 'guarenteed' for three years. Most considered the Cayman S the car to have on paper but some are now thinking it's the vette. Given that the RX7 dominated before the Z06, I'm wondering where they all are in this class?

musclecarconvert 08-29-10 05:43 PM

As far as the normal vette the rx7 will smoke it, the problem is that the rx7 is old and the updates most people make to them to correct reliability issues knocks them out of any stock class.

I know this was a huge reason 5 or so years ago when I ran mine in stock classes.

If they allowed radiator swaps and minor reliability mods to the 7 im sure you would see plenty more that qaulify for the class.

Just to add my $0.02.

The C5 Z06 is fast. I can beat a C5 if I'm driving well, which is not often enough.
Mind you, my car is not stock.
Not too radical, but quite a bit faster than stock.
(t04s, 350 rwhp, 4.77 diff)

The C6 Z06 is just ridiculously fast. A stock FD cannot keep up.
A modified FD will need to be well built to beat a stock C6 Z06
Mine might even beat a C6 Z06, but probably not with me driving it (so far).

A C6 can fit 335 tires under the stock rear fenders.
Between all the tire and motor, it's an impressive package.

Look at the 2009 Solo Nationals results and you can see that SSM RX-7's could get a couple seconds on a C6 Z06.

The fast FD's all have a lot of rear tire (at least 315) modified upper A arms for front camber, and some also have modified lower A arms to get the roll center correct.

I don't think the FRC C5's are going to get smoked by the RX-7(and I say that as a guy who loves the rotary and has owned 25 or so FD's). I'm also not saying the RX-7 is going to be faster than the FRC C5 either. I think they are fairly evenly matched in stock class with the weird rules/mods. I personally do think the car to have for A stock is the FRC C5, but that's just me. Not to mention, the best mod you can do is the driver mod ;)

Not that it's pertinent to the thread, but you can fit 345's on the rear of a C6. Chadwick(the SSM National Champion) doesn't have modified lower A Arms to get the roll center correct. Not sure about Eric and Andy.

C6 Z06 or Grand Sport, yeah. But there's no way a 345 is going to work well on the stock 19x10 wheel you get with a regular C6. I have 305/35r18 on 18x11s on my '06 C6 and they barely clear the fender, and slightly rub the inside at full compression (with my coilovers at my ride height). My front 18x10 275/35r18 finally clear the fender and they also rub the inside at close to lock... I had 18x11 295/30r18 fronts and they rubbed the fender...

I have seen folks upgrade from C6 sizes (18x8.5+19x10) to C6Z sizes (18x10+19x12) and run C6Z sized rubber on the street... to do similar at the autocross you'd be in ASP...

Brent Dalton 08-31-10 04:30 PM

opps, yeah... left the Z off the end of C6.... meant C6Z:

Driver mod obvoiusly is key, but i put 3 seconfs on a c6 zo6 in a solo1 back on mothers day.

My car only makes 312 whp and with the heat probably less than that, I am also only running 275 rear and 245 fronts with just coils and basically stock camber and a rear wing.

In my experience an rx7 in SS vs a reg C5 both on hoosier's or Victo racers with equal drivers the rx7 was faster, until the z06 came out. I think with the same 2 running in AS with the mods allowed the rx7 should still be faster in an autocross setting. They have quicker response and with teh stock sequential setup are more responsive and have better power delivery than the vette, even if it is 50 hp less.

just my .02

Brent Dalton 08-31-10 05:39 PM

yeah, C6Z is no contest for an FD unless it is heavily modified with equal drivers. Case and point: Fritz runs 2:06's at VIR in his well prepped FD and drives better than damn near anyone there(he's been driving FD's at VIR since it reopened about 10 years ago... and he's has a helluva lot of raw ability on top of that ). I've seen an ok driver in a C6Z run 2:05's all stock with ho ho's.

Didn't the FRC and regular coupe have 345hp stock and 350ftlbs of torque? RX-7 is 255 and 217. Don't get me wrong, there is a good reason I can't get away from the FD as it handles and brakes great with the right modifications and it is an absolute blast to drive, but the Corvette has alot going for it as well... for starters, 100 more hp and 130 more torque. The sequentials are a very nice system though :)

Best of luck whatever you decide to do. I'm sure you'll enjoy either one.

Not sure I've seen you with the same name or avatar over there. :-)

*Love* Jerry's STO car. Amazing.

Don't get me wrong, I love my FC, and have gone through several first gen cars, but out of the box my C6 was amazing. More grip on the stock runflats than I ever got from the old (current at the time!) BFG R1s and full MazdaComp suspension on the FC. And here I am still building that same FC... go figure.

I've driven a few FDs but never owned one. Maybe one day. Wife & I looked at an RX8 on Sunday, too...

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I think it's going to be a good fight between the FD and non-Z C5s. C5s carry more weight, but more power and tire. Both handle great. The C5 is super picky about the littlest thing (1/16" of total toe either way makes a huge difference!). Lots and lots of development on the cars and all that C5Z knowledge will go right back on to the C5s if somebody chooses to take it there.

IMO the biggest issue will be finding a truly stock FD...

I know what Chadwick doesn't have the lower arms, though he does non-stock upper arms for camber.

Re Eric and Andy: One of them has modified lower arms, the other has a purchased set, Nagisa I think.

345 is a lot of tire.
Getting that much tire under an FD requires mods obviously.
