Need good cheap fiberglass hood
 

Its been a long time coming but I think i might be getting my project car going this summer. I need a good lightweight fiberglass hood since my old heavy metal one has a deer shaped impression in it. Anyone know of any good ones?

oh yeah, the car is an FC.

Have you looked at a stock aluminum hood?

I cant find an aluminum hood around here thats worth putting on.

That AWR hood doesnt have cut outs for the lights. Can this hood be modified to accept lights or is there a core or something in the way. how much does this hood cost?

One thing with that is that it probably doesn't have a hood latch or hinge mounts, as it'd be meant to be pinned on.

AWR hood is for an EP race car with no hinge, latch or light provisions. All those things could be added or done to the hood, but it might be easier to buy a replacement hood. I have an AWR hood with a turbo II scoop, built to use stock turbo II intercooler that I would sell. again no latch, hinge or light provisions. hood pins or dzus fastners. very light though

That stuff in very expensive, I'm guessing $2300 or so for a full set without rear bumper. Makes the 1st gen EP stuff look like a bargain. A friend made my last set of fiberglasss parts for less than a grand.

OC, if you search on this forum there is a guy that makes carbon hoods, not sure what gen hoods he makes.

Any fiberglass hood that you'd want to use on the street is going to be heavier than the stock hood or very close to it.

Not to disagree with you, but the stock hood weighs something like 50lbs. I could build a fiberglass hood that's streetable for well under that.

A stock "STEEL" hood does weight quite a bit.

The aluminum hood however is much lighter. I have a fiberglass hood now but my old aluminum hood was still lighter.

I would say the aluminum hood was around 6-8 lbs lighter. There was a definite difference between the two.

Well, i dont think this car is going to see a whole lot of street use. No, I'm not looking for a heavy show hood. Aluminum would be ok, but there is none around here. I think i might have seen a dented alu hood for $300.... for that price, i think i could get something better. a fiberglass hood made for racing is fine and so are hood pins. I make a lot of fiberglass stuff myself and i dont see how a FG hood could weigh more then the stock steel 54lbs hood... I would make my own hood but the cost of making a mold and the price of mistakes costs more then just buying one. If i did make a mold, i would have the ability to make more hoods and sell them. I just don't think there is a market for them though.

it seems those aluminum hoods get all dented if you look at them the wrong way. I have NEVER personally seen one of those hoods in mint condition.

On my old FP car I had a Chevy Monte Carlo f.g. circle track hood that I cut down to fit my FC. I found it at a race car swap meet for I think $50. It weighed less than 10 lbs and I had to use hood pins but it worked. I am sure there are some race shops around IL.

OC, he's saying Fiberglass is heavier than a stock aluminum hood, not steel. I can see that he'd be right, my hood is a light mofo. Sorry can't help you with sourcing an aftermarket Fiberglass or CF hood, although I'd think that wouldn't be super tough to find.

I'm sure you could cut out the molded in headlight covers and seal up the edges, since you have experiance making fiberglass it shouldn't be hard for you.

that AWR hood is actually from Mariah, and its crazy expensive. I called the guy today and he said $700. He also said it weighs about 15lbs. He had some that were 'second quality' that had a problem with the gel coat. Said it had air bubbles in it that might blister if it got warm out; and it might have HUNDREDS of bubbles. He said i could have one of those for $400! I think thats pretty expensive for something that sounds like they should be paying ME to take away.

For 700 bucks, i could make an entire mold and a hood.

This totally blows since after doing some thinking, i wanted the hood with no headlight cut outs. I was planning a custom headlight setup...
