NASA Eastern States Championships
My friend Ben is going to take another shot at a Performance Touring Championship at Road Atlanta in my Race Car at the end of the month here. It appears we may be the only RX-7 at the event besides a V8 powered FD in Super Touring. And i think i only see one other rotary powered car anywhere else in the registration, an RX-8 in Time Trials (which may be an MX-5 as well). Kinda sad!
In any case, anyone in the Atlanta area who's interested, come spectate and say hi. The PTE Field has a good chance of being 10 cars deep and the spec miata field is fairly deep and should be as entertaining as always. |
Looked into running my ITS car in NASA PT but it would have been classed way out of its performance potential. That is two cars so classed within NASA.
|
It wouldn't take that much time or money to make it competitive in PTE. If you would like some info on my setup PM me. It's nothing that couldnt be accomplished in a weekend and be reversible in a couple hours.
But no, it does not directly cross over well without any changes. |
Looking forward to the event. I won't be in attendance this year though. Too busy with work, still kind of disenchanted with NASA. Wish I still lived in Georgia. Not complaining too much since COTA is an hour away though. What PT class is your friend running in?

We took the win. Good race, great drivers. We just had the miata's out classed in the HP category even with an average of 400lbs more than them. |
Video from the 2nd place Miata driver Eric Powell. |
Ben doing his thing! |
I'd just like to take an oportunity in this thread to thank some folks/companies who over the years have stood out in my mind as offering the best products and support to make the car as bullet proof as it is today.
Rob at Pineapple Racing for the engine build and all the technical support Ground Control & Koni for a great suspension package AWR for superb/stout misc racing parts Mazda for their industry leading support of grassroots race teams Waytek Wire for great electrical supplies Cobalt Brakes Hoosier Tires |
Congrats guys!

pages 47 and 60 for our pics...they got the story completely wrong. We out qualified the field. Durring ONE of the qualifying races Jason got the fastest lap time doing some bump drafting with another miata... |
What rear gear are you running?
|
4.3
Which wasn't as terrible as i thought it would be considering the tire size and grip (or lack of) that we had. We were able to use 2nd coming out of T7 which gave us a little bit of an advantage. Also nearly topped out 4th at the end of the back straight and thus never had to use 5th anywhere. Car was right in the meat of 3rd coming up over T5. So we for sure had an advantage on the straights being we were in the power band on corner exit a lot. The 2-3 shift still SUCKS tho and i'm guessing a 5.12 would have worked better but, hard for me to say. |
Running 5.12 and that makes 5 and 7 third gear corners, and I do use 5th on the back straight.
|
Based on our data with the 5.12 T5 would be between 3rd and 4th. Our 4.3 put us right in the power band through all of T5, that's the only reason i would've hesitated to use a 5.12
His best time all weekend was a 1:42.5 |
Data shows minimum speed in 5 around low 70s. That makes 7400ish in 3rd going up the hill.

Nice Nod from Mazda Motorsports. Some of the story got lost in translation, but hey, it's gonna happen. ;) |
