More tire temp ?

Didn't want to hijack DamonB's thread but after reeding it and doing a search I have a couple questions about taking tire temps.

I understand that a probe pyrometer is what you want to use because you want temps neer or at the cord level inside the tire. So does this mean you acualy stab the tire? I have a temp probe on my multimeter but it is 1/4 inch thick...has anyone seen thiner probes for multimeters? Has anyone tried using a thicker probe on the outside of the tire ... if so how does it compare to other methods?

I will be doing mostly autocrossing with street tires and no one up here bothers to look at tire temps so they have been of no help. We don't have a local track so does anyone have sugestions on a procedure for getting consistant reedings in a open parking lot. For instance, should I just turn in a circle one direction for a couple of laps, take reedings then switch directions...or should I set up a figure 8???

This is something that I have been thinking about and would like to play with. It may not gain me much time on an autocross course but I would like to fool with my cars setup anyway.

Thanks

Yeah, you need a thin tire probe and actually stab into the tire until it hits the cord. if you go to a parking lot, I would try a figure eight to get even temos side to side. You will REALLY have to work it. Good luck.
