Min weight fully prep.
For those who auto-x or road race, is it possible to prep a NA 2nd gen at or below 2000 lbs?
|
For which class? IT, Production, GT, SP?????
|
if you replaced every bolt on part with something lighter. it would be very difficult to get under 2000#'s

Russ, call me again, we never ended up talking. Try a turbo(small for AX, Mid size for road race, and minimum weight BP car, assuming you are going to AX. You can also run it in NASA Super Unlimited, and SCCA SPO. Carl 707-696-2705

What is the min weight for EP road race cars?
|
I'll tell you in a few months. My bare shell was completely stripped in an akaline bath. My dash is a section of 20 gauge aluminum, with 16 gauge for the instrument package. My goal is a full up turbo car around 2350 with driver (235 lbs) so we'll have to see how I do.

I believe it's possible to get an FP 2nd gen down to 1900lbs. At least that's the assumption I'm working under. ;)
You're going to have to do more than a regular strip job though... it'll have to include a sawzall. Trent, I'm interested in the alkaline bath you put your car into. Does it strip everything down to the metal? Are you worried about rust in places you won't be able to paint (like inside the rocker)? |
So far no one says they have actually done it; no one above reported hard numbers yet.
Autocross FP class allows tremendous modifications; if you took advantage of every weight reduction allowed in the rule book, you can loose a lot of weight, but it starts getting more and more expensive to get those last few pounds off. |
Back in the "real" Trans-Am days Penske used to acid dip their Camaro chassis to make them lighter.

E-Prod 2nd gen weight is 2450...
|
my car currently has everything stripped, fiberglass body panels, cut away doors, simple cage, and basicly only the equipment needed to race. car weighs 2300# with 1/2 load of fuel and no driver. using fiberglass doors could save a few pounds but the weight is in items like the rear suspension and front cross member. if you built some tubular control arms and a new front and rear crossmembers you could get below 2000# but the cost and engineering involved would not be worth the money. As for stripping the car with acid. this is getting harder to find because of the EPA type regulations. most car builders are using media blasting to remove paint and undercoating type products. it removes everything without damaging the metal like sand blasting does. check around town this is usually easier to find and sometimes cheaper. good luck on your project.

Would the tublar control arms and special cross members be SCCA legal for an E production limited prep car?
|
I am not up to speed on the current production rules but I think they would be as long as it used the oem mounting locations. some of the e-production racers would know for sure. AWR had built some front control arms but I don't think they used them.

The EP weight is 2400# with an alt trans 2450#. This was for 04 but for 05 that has been changed to 2300 for the carb cars and 2350 for FI. Add 2.5% for alt. syncro ttrans and 5% for dog ring gear box. OK, so my car at the runoffs last year arrived at 2400# with driver (160#)and ~130# ballast so the weight of the car would be about 2110#. Remove the fuel cell, smaller rad. glass doors no fire system, smaller battery, lighter wheels (14# on my car), no radios or data system, rear end cooler and a lot less cage and you could very well reach the 2000# weight.
