LSD IT-s DIff
 

Hi guys,

I need to get an LSD into my IT-S project car..and was looking to go with a 5.12 stock mazda clutch type diff. My problem right now is that I was planning on picking one up from Mike at ISC and he doesn't have any cores in stock right now..and might not for some time. As my car is a '91 and didnt come with an LSD Im kinda shafted right now.

Does anybody have either a stock non-turbo LSD they would want to part with, or a prebuilt 5.12 to sell?

Also if you have any reccomendations on any other shops who do a good job on diff builds that I might be able to speak to..or junkyards that might have a stock one I would appreciate it.

Yep, time for wrecking yard hopping. You need to find a GXL LSD if you want to be completely legal or a TII diff and axles if you want a better LSD.

I don't understand the word "completely" in this context.

BTW, I've got a turbo LSD diff for sale if anybody needs one. 4.10 ratio.

Edit: Also have a NA LSD diff that I could sell, also 4.10 ratio. No idea whether the friction plates are worn out (probably). I'd expect most LSDs in the wrecking yard to also have worn out plates. I'm now using a torsen and like that much better than a worn out LSD.

Thanks Ludwig...yeah Ive come to find out the hard way HOW MUCH cheaper it would have been to buy a prepped car...but unfortunatelly Im already too far along the way with the prohect to back out now....thanks again!

Unless Im on crack.. I believe that the point was... The TII axles, and Differential, as well as Transmission and Rotor Housings are not legal in ITS. They are not the NA driveline components.
Stronger axles=replace less than NA axles in the grand scheme of things.. Someone somewhere would claim unfair.
Now as far as TII rotor housings in a NA motor...IIRC you CAN change the exhaust diffusers from a TII into the NA.. but I am not more than 95 percent on that one.
IIRC the exhaust timing is exactly the same.. and it just saves on time to change the sleeve. Not other advantage. BUT.. the SCCA says Not legal!... So therefore.. you cant. People have been DQed for that.

But yeah.. TII diff and axles.. not legal cause they were not options for the NA cars.

IT rules state that you can use any LSD that fits the stock housing. Stock for your NA or for a TII? That's why a TII diff isn't technically legal in a NA car.

One problem with LSDs in ITS 240Zs (and probably other IT cars) is that the LSD heats the diff so much that they wear everything out and you can't run a diff cooler in IT. Many IT cars run a welded diff for this very reason.

Yeah, my point was that using a TII diff housing and the TII axles is clearly not legal in ITS. I actually bought my TII diff before I knew that (but learned soon enough to not run it). Sounded like you were saying the GXL is "competely" legal and the TII is "sort of legal". Your "isn't technically legal" has that same ring to it. I'm just trying to encourage the thinking that if it's not "completely legal", then it's ILLEGAL, and if you're going to knowingly run an illegal car, I hope you are DQed.

One reason I jump on stuff like this is that by nature I don't like controversy, but the SCCA setup is that the drivers self-police their competitors. So if you're running an illegal car, the only corrective measure that's likely to happen is for me to protest you. I don't really want to do that, and I don't like it if someone puts me in the position of needing to do it. If I did protest, some people would think of me as the bad guy for making the protest. I just want to raise the awareness that the problem is the guy running the illegal car.

At sebring recently.. I forgot tell my friend helping out to do the thin gear lube gimmick... and he put in some lube for my F350.......

Needless to say.. the 1st gen rear was a bit noisy.. Well Lubed.. but a bit noisy cause the lube was soooooo thick.

After the Sunday Race.. I Pulled into the pits.. stopped in our spot and got out and noticed the anti-sieze was smoking off the rear studs......... !!!!!!!!!

Needless to say the rearend is coming apart tonight.. and I am gonna go through it and change the axle bearings and make sure it is lubed correctly for Daytona next weekend.

Ouch, that's hot! Wait, do you mean the wheel studs? If so that's probably from the brake heat.
