Lotta ported guys use the Borla muffler from mazdaspeed. 7sOnly uses it with their 12a PP GT2 cars. My Supertrapp can take the heat of my 12a JBridge :)

The lava rock muffler is supposed to be super durable and can take all the heat and muffle good too.

speedturn 08-06-04 09:01 AM

The all stainless steel mazda factory racing lava rock muffler is durable and does take 30 dBs off an all out peripheral port race motor.

The packing will melt out of a stainless steel supertrapp and turn into glass klinkers.
The discs on a supertrapp, even stacking 20 of them, will kill the top end power on an all out peripheral port road race rotary engine.

Hi Tom,

My 12a j-bridge with 23 discs + endcap put 205hp to the ground. Peaked @ 8800rpms. 42mm chokes in dellorto! Looks pretty good to me?

Peoples have dyno'd that 21discs + does not take power away.

diyman25 08-09-04 09:08 PM

with lava rock. my DB at idil is around 100DB. so with sec muffler I might low it to 90.
BTW my car is 13BPP

SPiN Racing 08-09-04 10:38 PM

In one of the Racing forums.. not sure which one.. they simply buy the Dynomax I believe... that is riveted on the end cap so it is rebuildable.. and is a Stainless.. Fiberglass packed one. For like 90 or so bucks IIRC.. and Drill out the rivets.. gank the fiberglass.. and then re-pack it themselves with lavarock from Home Depot used on BBQ grilles. Bam Done.

FOOTNOTE... Use GOOD steel rivets.. people mistakenly put in Aluminum I gather.. and it vibrated the rivets out on track and dumped all the rocks for thier competitors to hit.

Drive Fast: Again, I have to say that a peripheral ported race engine is way more sensitive to exhaust back pressure than other motors. Too much restriction on a 13B PP motor will reduce it down to the power levels of your 12A JP motor.

Where can I get the Mazda Racing lava rock muffler?

Dan

Cheers! 08-15-04 09:07 PM

supertrapp is supercrap...

to buy the Lava Rock muffler from Mazda's factory racing parts department:
0000-06-9101-LR 3" inlet and outlet $408.90
http://www.mazdamotorsports.com/wcs...-06-9101-LR.jpg

you must be a real racer, with real printed race track results, in order to buy race parts from Mazda. If you have autocross results sheets or quarter mile slips that you can send them, then you are eligible to register with Mazda and buy their parts at discount prices.

That's actually not true, a lot of people think that though. Anyone can buy the race parts, it's only the stock components (with a discount) that you cannot purchase without race results.

speedturn 08-24-04 04:26 PM

This is on the front page of their website today:

MAZDASPEED Motorsports membership is only available to racers within the U.S. and Canada. Parts are now only available to registered members who are currently racing or building a vehicle for racing.

MAZDASPEED MOTORSPORTS DEVELOPMENT will NO LONGER be selling to non racers. You will need to be a registered member of our program, with current race results, to purchase ANY parts from us. You will also need to log in with a valid ID and password, to view our catalog.

Peripheral port motors have some pretty tremendous backfires, probably due to the long overlap in port timing. Homemade lava rock oval mufflers will not survive a peripheral port motor under road racing conditions. Been there, done that.

ok, so they changed the rules on me...

M104-AMG 06-25-07 10:29 PM

I guess the lava rock muffler from mazdacomp might be ok if you're trying to use it as ballast!! Those things weigh like 40lbs! I'm currently working on building a couple custom mufflers for my own street car, that should quiet it down pretty well and never blow out..

speedturn 08-03-07 01:52 PM

I have a used Mazda lava rock muffler I removed from a crashed ex- Roger Mandeville peripheral ported engine in a Dave Kent chassis road racing RX-7 about 4 years ago. Richard Sneed was driving and crashed this car at Sebring then. In the crash, it sustained a crease or wrinkle at the inlet side - this can be repaired; this does not hurt performance. It has a heavy stainless case, and is 3" diameter straight thru. Inlet and outlet pipes are 3" stainless. It can withstand the rigors of a 370 hp peripheral port rotary running sustained full throttle application.

I decided to go another route to muffle my race car, so I never used it. It has been stored inside these last four years. I paid $100 + shipping for it four years ago. I will sell it for $100 plus you pay shipping. Terms of sale: you prepay by check or by paypal, then I ship it. No COD. I am at zipcode 35803 in Huntsville, Alabama if you want to try and pre-figure shipping costs. I don't check the PM very often, i recommend that you email me direct at
speedturn at hotmail.com
please put the words "Mazda Muffler" in the subject line so that I can tell you apart from all the spam out there :)
