IT7 Tranny Question
Hi,
I just got a rebuilt 5-speed for our '79 IT7 racecar but I drained the fluid out and don't know what to replace it with. What weight/grade should I use? My Dad said it looked like gear oil but he wants to be sure about it. Any fellow IT7 racers here? Thanks in advance! |
I have MT90 in my tranny
|
I use Mobil 1 full synthetic 75w-90 gear oil - performs the same as REdline MT90, but the Mobil 1 gear oil is available at many common auto parts stores.

Look for me next year. I will be running IT7. I tend to hang out with the Meathead Racing guys.

Shooot! I cant afford all that stuff!!
I just use....regular old Valvoline 85/90 gear oil! Never had a problem yet! Watch- I say that...and this weekend ill have a problem with it!!!!! |
For the first gen tranny i've been told by some to use only a GL-4 lubricant, as the GL-5 lubes wear the syncros out faster. Personally I've always run MT-90 or Amsoil.
Your right SCCAIT7 this stuff gets too expensive. On my ITA car I just change it once a season. |
Oh yeah how much do I put in? I have put one Mobil 1 full synthetic 75w-90 gear oil container in it so far.

Cool, thanks a million for all who replied!
I guess the rear end takes the some lubricant as the tranny? Thanks! |

I've been using Heavy Shockproof in the rear with zero trouble. The limited slip even works better now, too.

Has anyone tried ATF in the trans?
|
Yes. It works fine for day to day use, and light drag use, but under heavy abuse the bearings don't last much.
ATF is basically 5W20 with friction modifiers. Just did the final event of the year. This transmission has lasted all season, which is a first for me. I love Shockproof. |
