you might want to be more specific about what you want to use it for,
for tires infareds are not that useful as a probe is better, for hoses and stuff it might be fine......
brakes......maybe yes maybe no, reflective surfaces dont read as acurate as flat coatings......in my trade i need to put black tape on things (copper/alum) to be sure of a quality reading

So why would it be less useful for a tire? It's a non reflective surface with a wide area. Seems like temperature readings would be more consistent.

The tire cools from the outside as you enter the pits, a probe style pyrometer will give you a more accurate temperature because it's the temp of the carcass, not the surface which has cooled somewhat.

thanks Black91n/a, that says it all

I wouldnt worry about the temps on a car to the point of needing a laser, unless your planning on doing professional levels of racing. The only time in my life I ever needed one was when the F15E carbon fiber brakes had an issue of exploding under short landing conditions. We would check the temp from a safe distance before approaching the plane.

Save your money and get something you will use.

I'll be doing 22 track days next season or more depending on time/work, I need to read tire, brakes and and a few pipes. I'll be doing winter testing soon so I want to know when the tires are at proper temp. I record everything, temp reading would be great to monitor.

Does anyone have actual models that I can research?
My budget is $200

Thanks :)

2 in 1, both laser for the stuff you don't want to poke, and probe for the tires.

This is PERFECT! Thank you!:icon_tup:

Do you actually stab the pyrometer into the tire? How do you read the temp of the tire that's not the surface of it?

Black91n/a 12-02-07 07:30 PM

Yes, you stick the probe into the tire face, there's a little pin type thing that penetrates the surface a little bit. It can also be used on hard things like brakes.

we needed one this weekend, as the water temp probe got changed out in hour number 2, so we ended up using a heat gun to figure out what the water temp was at.

handy tool...
