This is how we get represented at AutoX?!

Who is that, and where might I find him? Any hours of the day good for BEING RUN OVER IN A NOT-RETARDED LOOKING RX-7!?

WTF is going on with the tires?! How does he turn?!

I promise it wouldn't in AutoX.

Not with THOSE tires anyway.

SonicRaT 12-29-04 01:31 PM

What's wrong with hoosier slicks?

locketine 12-29-04 01:35 PM

The fact that he's using em prolly means they don't scrub. The best, most amazing autoX car I've seen so far was a rattle can black rabbit v8 monster with hoosiers. I'm glad he isn't doing it the other way around and using an imaculate stock rex, and getting his ass kicked.

BLUE TII 12-29-04 02:08 PM

We just call that the "autocross fitment" when talking about tires :)

20B10AE 12-29-04 04:20 PM

Try telling Carmon Colvin tha the's wasting his time running a setup like that! I've seen Carmon drive. I wouldn't want to put my "normal" tire setup against him. :D

I'll try to get him to respond here. We'll see what he says.

Bob_The_Normal 12-29-04 05:24 PM

IF those don't rub under full turning I'll retract that... but seriously, those do not look like they can turn more than 50%

lol, you have a problem with that pic?
its like a Tripoint wheel and tire setup without the thousand dolllar widebody kit.

(Tripoint = very accomplished FC/RX7 in autocross.)

I drove a friends non-turbo FC at a local autox with 15x10 fronts and rears on goodyear slicks, holy shit did it have some grip!!! I've got to dig up the phot somewhere. I will probably be running a similar setup in 2005 on my LS1FC in E-Mod... but probably 16x10 fronts and 16x12 rears!

owen is fat 12-29-04 05:37 PM

not the same car I drove but this FC is also on 15x10's all around-

I've seen totally nasty looking Omnis and GTIs that have that same paint job and tire setup coincidentally, give our local fastest *modded* FD a real tough time securing FTD at each event...................

Racing is about how you finish, not how you look.....at least to those who win once in a while, haha.

PureSephiroth 12-29-04 11:48 PM

all i know is he's beating that truck!

scotty305 12-30-04 12:27 AM

I've ridden in that car, it's plenty fast for a non-turbo. There is no rubbing at all. Instead of making the car pretty with fender flares, he spends the money on tires instead. You can find him at many of the Los Angeles region autocrosses. www.solo2.com

Here's a photo of my car, it's a bit prettier to look at, and more powerful also, but the suspension and tires are not at the same level. Pat's a better driver than I am also. I'd be really happy if I could beat his times in my car, because I don't plan on buying R-compounds anytime soon.

All that counts is how fast that "retard looking RX-7" can go.

Weird, never seen him there. Maybe I don't go watch enough. ;D

I would bet that the tires don't rub because the suspension won't allow it. It appears that this driver has put a lot of time into things other than looks. I would also bet the he would beat nearly everyone that has posted on this thread.

There are no time penalties for bad paint :D

Come to think of it, I haven't seen that brown RX-7 at an autocross in about three or four months. Maybe he's been busy with other stuff, I'm not sure. Hopefully he'll be at the Jan 22-23rd event in Fontana. He's a really nice guy, you should ride shotgun with him next time you see him at an event. Same goes for me, if you see my car and would like a ride, you're welcome to it, although I don't know if you'd be impressed by my driving or not. This goes for Saturdays only, no passengers on championship days.

TwinTurboTeddy (from rx7club) visited us once in his nice-looking yellow FD, and brought his g/f with matching black FD. I had other committments that day, I wish I'd had more time to hang out with them. He did pretty well for a first-timer, although I think his car has too much power for the tires he was using.

Racing is one of those areas where ugly is forgivable if it goes fast.

Would I want to be seen driving something like that on the street? No, not really (though arguably my beater is uglier).

Would I want to be seen in something like that if it were turning out FTD consistently? Heck yes!

... and where do I come up with a way to show up at an autox with a FD, and bring a g/f with a FD as well?

FC-chan 01-01-05 10:27 PM

better to be fast than pretty...of course if you can be fast and pretty...

Bob_The_Normal 01-01-05 10:53 PM

Well... I know "pride" doesn't matter as much in autox as .005 seconds does...

But I don't see any reason to race a car that I'd be embarassed to be seen in.

Sure. You can make it fast... hooray.

Somehow I think if I was going for an autox only car it wouldn't be the 2nd gen.

I'm not putting down the 2nd gen, I got it so I COULD autox. But I also want to daily drive it... that's the point. If I had some other daily driver, I wouldn't want some boat of an old sports car for autox! (Yeah the truth hurts doesn't it! haha)

If it comes to an autox only car... I'd pick something that I think would be fun to compete in.... a Caterham SS? ;)

Maybe in a few years I'll be renegging on this and I'll never hear the end of it... but right now I dont see the point in running an RX-7 like that one. =p

Some of the fastest cars at the track are also the ugliest. Many of these same cars are track use only. I wouldn't insult his unless you've raced him and won.

The 2nd gen may be "some boat of an old sportscar for autox" but it's a boat that will usually trump many other fast street cars such as the C5 among others on an autox track.

You're kidding right?

C5?

Come on, I dislike "AMERICAN MUSCLLEE!!!!222" as much as the next rotary guy... but they're not even CLOSE to being in the same class!
