how strong are TII axles?
So Ive been thinking about putting my slicks on lately, as im curious to see what the car will do, but I drive it to and from the track and I dont want to have to tow it home. I have been driving the car with sticky 275 street tires for a couple years and havent broken anything, but it spins like crazy all the time.
My whole drivetrain is stock from the clutch back. I dont care about breaking the tranny, I can drive home in 4th if need be, and I have a spare, so I figure axles are the next in line. The slicks I wanna run are 26x10s, I figure the car should be good for a low-mid 10 second pass with them if it holds together. Has anyone been running times like that on stock driveline parts? I'd like to run 18 psi (around 600-650whp, 500+ ft-lbs) if theres a chance it will hold together, but it doesnt seem likely to me. The problem is I am completely out of money to throw at this thing, so upgrading is not an option. Someday in the future I plan on a supra tranny with a 8.8 independent rear end and 300m axles, but it wont be this summer unless someone donates them. So what do you guys think, slicks or no? |
no, if you have no money to fix it, dont break it.
|
well i can probably get a set of replacement stock axles if i have to, i guess my question really is is there any chance at all that the driveline will hold up to 500+ ft-lbs and slicks?
|
Take a set of axles with you and bring some tools. ;)
|
yeah tahts the plan if i do it
you guys having another dyno day anytime soon? |
Nothing planned yet.

I would be worried about my tranny at that point. If you grenade your clutch the car won't move. That would be worse than the axles, a little harder to change at the side of the road.

Stub axles fail first, the inner CV cup and/or ring and pinion is next so going 300M on the axles doesn't help you much. Most of the v8 guys start breaking things the second they add slicks at >400 hp.
If you're putting down that much power you might want to think about doing the mustang cobra rear end. Talk to AndrewB70 on v8rx7forum.com if you're interested. |
i have an upgraded clutch, that isnt an issue.
as for the cobra rear end, thats what i said in the 1st post. you still use 300m axles with it. but I dont have the $ for a whole new drivetrain right now, so thats not happening. |
I would personally say don't do it if you don't have the cash. Worst thing is if you get stuck with with no cash to fix it. That is a lot of torment on the axles to be runing slicks.

Actually you guys have it back asswards. Slicks are much more forgiving on the drivetrain than street tires or drag radials.
I have snapped two axles on drag radials and have yet to snap any with slicks. |
More forgiving that drag radials I might believe, vs street tires is hard to understand. Are any tires more likely to wheel hop than others?
|
slicks + decent power = destroyed axles..
if you have a two way you can still drive on one axle .. haha a... just dont put your foot down , as youll find your self changing lanes .... most people with drag cars go straigh up hilux or 9 inch.. |

werd. andrewB is a good friend of mine. that subframe/rear can take some serious abuse. i'd definitely check into it. but as far as your current setup goes, i'd just head up to the track expecting to break something and see what happens. just bring some extra axles and butt-axles and make a few hard passes. FWIW, about the slicks vs sticky drag radials: slicks absorb MUCH more of the instant shock that the driveline sees during a launch, so your drivetrain is much better off on some wrinklewall slicks than it is on some stick street tires with a stiff sidewall. i think you'll be fine launching at the track. |

I have snapped two axles on drag radials and have yet to snap any with slicks. As for wheel hop, I find a lot of that can be suspension related not tires...well tires affect it but suspension can fix it. Engine mounts can affect wheel hop a lot, try stiffer engine mounts. |
If you ride the clutch out it will hold up, but if you try & grinade it then yes they will break..
