How much boost for track days?
 

What is a safe boost level on stock sequentials for track day work? I have Cosmo fuel pump, stock injectors, street port motor, downpipe, midpipe, catback, PFS SMIC, Power FC. At 13psi, my A/F stays at about 10.5. Is it OK to run this much boost on the track?

I have no personal experience, but a good friend of mine says no higher than 12psi. He has gone through 8 motors in 102 trackdays. Even with a max of under 13psi he has to do a cool down lap after 3-4 hot laps at limerock.

His engine/cooling mods are as follows:
m2 intake, race ic, mazda comp rad, cwc oilcoolers, vented hood, water injection, dp, mp, cb, y-pipe, PFC, KDR ported motor w ceramic seals, msn ignition(if I remember correctly), evans coolant, stock front bumper.

I was kind of disappointed to hear his opinion, especially considering he has just about every mod in the book, although he could probably bring down temps by going with a GTC nose.

This friend wouldn't happen to have the initials JL?
About the boost thing.... Iv'e heard the same as above. No more than 12psi. I think 10psi would be the safest level honestly(if you can deal with diffirence in power).

If the engine is tuned properly and the cooling and oiling systems are able to take care of the additional power you should be able to run as much boost as you want. I run 10psi on my car but I have run cars as high as 25psi before. it is all in the tuning of the engine and making sure your cooling and oiling systems can take the extra power. if your car overheats at the track after continuous racing or just a few laps then a larger oil cooler and/or radiator may be needed. as long as the setup you have is tuned correctly I don't see any problems with 13psi of boost.

If the track offers it, it's always a good idea to mix in 100+ octane fuel with your 94 octane gas. It's costly but it is good insurance. Worst case scenario, buy a can of 108 Boost Octane from something like Walmart and put in your tank.

I wonder if an additional radiator(located in the 2nd oilcooler duct, run in series) would bring down temps more than an extra oil cooler.

An even more radical approach: install a giant radiator in the trunk and duct air to it from the roof or via vents in front of the rear fenders.

8 to 10 psi
 

My FD has 100, 400 miles on the original motor and 55+ track days...I'd say 8 to 10 psi is much safer. Running 100 octane race fuel is good insurance for those of us with stock ECUs and boost maps. 104 unleaded tends to bog the motor down (makes less hp) with the stock ECU, fuel and boost maps.

60 days of Track Time
 

I still have to instruct this weekend for the Ford SVTOA On Track program at Indianapolis Raceway Park; Oct 5/6 with the Badger Bimmer BMW CCA chapter's OctoberFAST @ Road America, and my final MDC event at Putnam Park Nov 9. If my car holds together by then, that will be 60 track days and ~104,000 miles on the original motor, turbos, transmission, rear end :cool:

In my 7 years of ownership, I find that the FD owners who've left the car WITHOUT too many high power mods, tend to have the best longevity with their cars. Contrast that with a close friend of mine who's on his third FD motor. Sure his car makes over 300 rear-wheel-horse, and his FD IS powerful down the straights--but that's a LOT to pay--for big speed at open track events! :cool:
