how long does race gas last
 

i am going to buy a 30 gal drum of 110 leaded race fuel
i was just wondering how long of a shelf life it will have
any tips for storage?
i may just want to buy a 55 gal drum if it will last 4 or 5 months

I've priced the 55gallon drums compared to the individual 5 gallon ones and there is almost no difference in the price. Did you price them out yet?

Not sure how long they will last....

i will be saving 75 cents a ga on the 30 and a 1.00 on the 55. not much but hey i will have enough left over to buy some 2 stroke

race gas if sealed in an air tight drum will last nearly indefinately. the problem is you are not likely to achieve the air tight seal once opened. race gas has some additives that evaporate easily and moisture from the air can also contaminate the fuel. Best to buy what you can use in the next couple weeks and not to stock pile. A good deal is not so good if the fuel gets contamninated and damages a very expensive race engine. buy what you need

I talked to a nice lady at VP the other day on this very subject. She said that the 5 gallon cans if left sealed will last 4 years. The "streetblaze" 100 octane was $10/gal though, compared to 6.50 at the track for Sunoco 100 so I'm buying at the track for now.

If anyone knows where I can get unleaded 100 for less than that I'm all ears.

Anyone know how long race fuel will last sitting in your stock fuel tank?

"stock" tanks vary a lot in how tightly they are sealed. If there is any kind of vent at all, then there will be problems created every time the temperature or atmospheric pressure changes just a little bit.

Another issue is the amount of ullage - the size of the air pocket - how much fuel vs how much air is in your vehcile gas tank.

There are just too many variables for someone to say with full authority that your fuel in your vehicle tank will be good for XXX weeks.

Think of fuel just like brake fluid. As long as the seal is not broken on the can, it is good stuff. Once the seal is broken, then the clock starts ticking. Every time the lid is removed again and again, the clock ticks faster and faster. That is why I like buying fluids in small containers that I know I will use up quickly.
