How come we don't have more RX-7's in One Lap???

I just wanted to know with all you guys and your kick ass cars, why don't we have more RX-7's in One Lap of America???
I think we need more to show them what we are all about.
Lots of you guys that race and guys that are putting out some good power would be more then a match for some of the Vipers, Supras, Z06's, etc...

How come no one here runs One Lap???

SleepR1 08-25-02 10:42 AM

Actually, I can think of two three guys:

Rick Potter from Canada (yellow R1).

Greg Stasiowski and co-driver Dale Black from PA (Montego Blue Base).

One reason, would be that the Rx7 is not a great long-distance traveling car, and there's not much room to carry all the crap you need for getting from track to track!

SleepR1 08-25-02 10:44 AM

Of course I'm up for it if the Rx7 Forum wants to sponsor my car and expenses. I'll also need a co-driver that will handle getting us from track to track (I'll do the time trials at the track):)

Most people who do one lap say you ideally need three teammates because of all the driving involved. With only two people fatigue goes up a lot.

Nathan Kwok 08-25-02 06:49 PM

Well, there's been at least one RX-7 in the top 10 of One-Lap for 5 of the last 6 years, thats not good enough for you ;)?

Silkworm 08-25-02 11:20 PM

I almost never see RX7s at the track except for full on race cars. Very very few show up to open-track style events, from my experience. In fact, for every 1 RX7, I see 10 Camaros and Firebirds.. Wierd given the superb handling of the RX7 :)

PaulC,

It's probably because FD Rx7s aren't very trackworthy WITHOUT excessive attention to detail in preparation. This is especially true if one is tracking his/her FD Rx7 at the west coast desert tracks, where the heat really kills these cars!

FWIW, I probably will end up getting another car for the track (probably a very-well-prepped Porsche 911 club racer if funds are available), and keep the FD Rx7 as a "nice" road car that can be used for OCCASIONAL open-track events.

RX-7's have a better record for One-Lap then any of the 1980--present Ferraris.

Tell those fuckers to come out more west... :D

Seriously, there's a lot of polics involved.&nbsp Too much crap that Brock Yates has to push the "sponsored" cars.&nbsp Rick Potter did an absolutely FANTASTIC job a couple years ago (?) taking 5th place overall - the car wasn't even covered in the magazine, but 1,2,3,4, AND 6th place finishers DID!&nbsp WTF!

One Lap is on the TO-DO list for my FC. It is the guiding principle that underlines it's build. IE, reclining seats instead of racing buckets, over-sized radiator, etc.

bkapold@aol.com 09-22-02 11:48 AM

Kevin (ASP) Wyum ran the 1 LAP in 95 or 96.....I know he was at the time working out his MoTec but didn't do that bad... Most people that aren't sponsored tell me that its not worth the effort and the expense is huge and most importantly, you need a week off of work to prepare, a week to race, and a week to get back to normal.... I'm not willing to cheat my family out there yearly vacation so I can sit in a car for 7 days......Someday though

fastrotaries 09-24-02 12:03 AM

within the next 5 years i seriously plan on doing it. It's one of those things that i need to acomplish at least once in my life.

KneeDragonR1 09-25-02 12:25 PM

Atilla the Fun, (3 rotor 2nd gen vert) ran One Lap with Rick Potter a few times. He can probably shed some light on the logistics and difficulties with it.

OTC if you're out West

If you're out West, why aren't you at OTC?

Lou Young did great in his FD and the 2nd Gen RX won its class.

My excuse...I haven't had a job for almost two years since being laid off. :(

no interest in One Lap because this is not racing. traveling cross country to run a couple time trial laps sounds like a drag. OTC is the same thing on the west coast. racing involves wheel to wheel action and competition, everything else is time trialing. so maybe there are just alot of hardcore RX7 racers who don't do any time trialing in their race cars. I plan to spend my limited racing budget racing against other racers on as many tracks as possible. I don't want to blow my year's budget on a week of time trialing, not matter how much off track fun there is.

Hey Ted,

This is just my opinion. You know alot of shit about rotaries, especially FCs. Why not get a job at a rotary specialist shop somewhere. In some places, you can't find a good rotary mechanic. Hell, get a small business loan and start your own business. Thats just my view.

David88vert 10-11-02 02:53 PM

The reason that they don't run One Lap more ..... probably the $2100 entry fee.

Unless someone trusts me that much, I still make a lot more money being a Computer Operator, sadly enough.

My credit rating is SCREWED.&nbsp I don't think I can get a loan to save my life right now! :(
