That's some serious airtime.

Svelte_7 10-26-07 01:24 PM

Is that going over the bypass at Thunderhill?

Silkworm 10-26-07 01:46 PM

That looks familiar...

I thought it loooked familiar. :bigthumb: I ran Thunderhill in reverse earlier this year but since I was on street tires, couldn't carry enough speed to get any wheels off. I did manage to break traction and hit the rev limiter several times though...

max1os 10-26-07 04:15 PM

Does the quality photography look familiar!!!!!!

Head-On photos does GREAT work:ylsuper:

This guy tried the same thing in a GT500, with a much worse outcome:

Next time you come up, drop Paul or myself a p.m., I'd love to see your car, or maybe we could all do a track day together! Paul and I live very close to the track and love to run our Fds at HPDE's.

Matt

DarkKnightFC 10-26-07 06:15 PM

Damn, I'll bet he thought he was in an RX-7 with hoosiers on it. Guess he wasn't.

jkstill 10-26-07 06:33 PM

If had had been thinking about what was happening, he would have turned his wheels back to counteract the spin and go off the track straight, even if it is backwards.

Sideways + dirt = roll

justturbo2 10-26-07 06:49 PM

nice pics

I saw that car come in on the hook, scary, no roll-over protection.

I usually run NASA Time Trials, it would be great to have a couple more FDs out there!! A track day all to ourselves sounds pretty cool though :bigthumb:

Silkworm 10-26-07 11:32 PM

Actually, he eats it in turn 9 not 5, scary stuff. Kinda reminds me of my rollover at Sears.

Gotta give the guy credit, I never had the balls to post my crash vid on the 'net.

Thanks for the photo props, I'll pass it on :)

I think Matt, AKA "rotoober" knew it was 9 not 5 as well. Just making a funny I suppose  I got what he meant, don't think it was viscous. I am just glad the dude is O.K. I was on pre-grid when they brought him in, not what you want to see right before going out to lay one down.

Is Norm your "Pop" or some other relation?

finky 10-27-07 09:36 AM

Good thing he taped it.... Sorry couldn't resist.

In the vid it is amazing how quickly that thing bites in the sand. I am glad we have grass up here to slide on to a safe stop.

Styk33 10-27-07 10:44 AM

Silkworm, I PM'd you about another matter ;)

Black91n/a 10-27-07 12:46 PM

Holy crap that looks dangerous! So you're cresting a hill and getting air in the middle of a corner? I'm surprised they'll let people run like that, that's gotta contribute to a lot more accidents there than anywhere else on track. I bet the insurance company for the sanctionning body would have a bird if they saw that.

rotoober 10-27-07 05:16 PM

Sorry, not trying to be mean, trying to make a funny. Thunder Hill is a great track with a lot of run off room almost everywhere, but if you get way out of shape, anything can happen. I don't even think the poor guy had got plates on the car.

BTW, those are some awsome photos of you two launching in the air! If it was me, those would be blown up and be hanging on my office wall for all to see.

Actually, I have never seen an incident in turn 5, air or no air. I suppose you have a bit of a point, but I think it's one of those things that looks worse than it is

Problem with Head-On-Photos is, they take so many awesome pics., I would go broke if I blew them all up :ugh2:

Svelte_7 10-27-07 09:21 PM

Just saw the vid and photo-album of that poor guy in the Mustang - do we know what happened to him? Was he towed out to a country road and wrote on the police report he was trying to avoid a deer?

Silkworm 10-29-07 01:29 PM

Yeah, 5 was totally safe. I'll try to post some in car vid of it going over the hill, it's really not that big of a deal. Just keep your wheels straight.

Yeah Norm's my pop. He drags my car out for me whenever I run with NASA.

Ok Gadd, we live so close to this track, I've got the perfect place to work on/store one, we really NEED to get a dedicated track car! We'll sponser it thru our business's and write off the expense.

Dave McLaughlin 10-29-07 04:56 PM

Flight!!!

:bigthumb: Michael;
That looks like quite a ride! Good thing you didn't have a co-pilot; you'd have
a mess on your hands...LOL. Good thing you have a full cage now, made you
grow wings. Awesome pic for sure. I had the pleasure of placing 2nd in the
car show @ Summit Point this weekend with Mazda Drivers. Motorweek was
covering the event in honor of the 40th anniversary of the rotory engine.
Unfortunately; on my third run in the pouring azz rain I rounded turn 8 and
kept turning right into a jersey wall. Crunched my front bumper and trashed
my right oil cooler. Woulda race taped the front bumper and kept running but
couldn't find a fitting to bypass the bad oil cooler. Good news is; the car show was over before the crunch...LOL. Best to ya Bud!

Let's see, I spent the first half of my adult life flying Hang Gliders instead of going to school or making money, and no one will ever accuse me of making smart financial decisions.

Hell ya lets do it!

Hey Dave!! Congrats on second place :icon_tup: Bummer about your "bump" in the rain, glad it's not too bad. How about some pics. of your car!! (before the crunch):)

Best to you as well, and again congratulations!!

max1os 11-10-07 02:55 AM

Well, I see alot of talk about tires in the "race car tech" section. In TTS, I have yet to see anyone come even close to the times I do with my Hoosiers. Other FD's or any other car on any other tire. Seems most are saying to compete with, or as good as Hoosiers.....NOT!

2007 NASA NORCAL TTS Champion. TTS track records at Infineon, Thunderhill and Llihrednuht.

2006 NASA NORCAL TTU Champion.

Impressive! Now take me for a ride next time you are up at Thunderhill! Lets see how you do with 200lbs. of dead weight in the passenger seat screaming bloody hell!

LOL.... The weight won't help, but that would not be the problem. The cage I have limits the passanger seat travel, if you are 6' plus, your knees will be up against the dash and your head will be in the roof:scared:

Hoosiers

Michael;

Are those the R6's? I ran a set of A6's for autocross and they did very well.
Just got a set of Kumho V710 for combo use, but I think they will get greasy on
me for track events. BTW; I'm gonna try to email you some pics, have been
busy lately and haven't had time to tinker on the computer.
Congratulations on your times there bud. You are kicking ass out there. You
need to come to the right coast and show us how it's done...LOL.

Regards,
Dave:icon_tup:

Hi Dave, I am running R6's. I have run the old A3 SO5's, never run A6's. I might try the A6's sometime next year. The older "A" compound stuck real well at first, but went away in a hurry, like at the end of the first lap. I hear the new "A's" are far superior. Not sure how much of all the tire stuff is track specific, we run tracks with average speeds from the low to middle eightys to low ninetys. Some long sweepers as well. All I know for sure is that Hoosiers have been very, very good to me:icon_tup: :icon_tup: :icon_tup:

As far as the "right coast" is concerned, you guys have some kick-ass tracks out there. Sounds like fun!!!

Look forward to seeing pics of your car:)

-Michael

max1os 12-10-07 12:28 AM

I'm thinking of selling the car..... Just had my second kid, now have a 21 month old and a 6 week old, man it's a lot of work. Just don't see running the car much, if at all any anytime soon. If anyone might be interested, let me know.

TIA,

-Michael

Hoosiers!

Oh wait, you guys arent talking about Indiana University...
They take too much of my money for me to afford the other Hoosiers!
