Are you right clicking, save as?

If anything, you might need to upgrade your player.

I've been using an old miniDV recorder for a couple of years and added a Go Pro about 4 months ago. The handheld shoots forward and the Go Pro shoots rear. The handheld records great footage but it's showing signs of wear from the vibration. The Go Pro footage is generally poor quality but is suitable if you're not trying to do much with it. Lately I've been using Premier Elements to splice picture-in-picture video and it's becoming clear how bad the Go Pro really is. It has a tendency to skip or repeat frames randomly, which causes the PIP to get out of sync. Since in-car video is my primary source of education these days I've decided to bite the bullet and buy a proper chasecam setup.

Yep I'm saving it to disk. I'm upgrading WMP now so hopefully that fixes the problem.

I've been looking at this system:

http://www.trackvision.net/

The guy who posted the video I linked to on vimeo has other videos up there showing the Trackvision overlay on the 720p video from the Aiptek. Very cool. It works with a bunch of data acquisition systems including Traqmate.

Here is a video from today, unfortunately I need to work on a better mount. The one I'm using has to much flex

Nice video. How do you have it mounted?

Using a ChaseCam triple suction mount http://www.chasecam.com/node/23

Here is a video from our local event yesterday. I change the placement on the roof and shorten the height of the mount. It is a bit more stable.

Video looks really good and is very stable. Were you recording at 720p 60fps?

Any chance you could post the video on Vimeo? I'd like to see it at closer to full quality. :)

Yes, set at 720p 60fps.

Onboard video is very tough on camera's.. I've been looking into getting a camera myself but just can't spend the money on it just yet..

I've looked into a bunch of different camera's and the one that caught my eye and also takes awesome video's is the P.O.V.1..

Check them out..

As far as a mount goes, I use this model:

http://www.svtek.com/Images_2/VS_Billet_Hor_Web.jpg

It just looked like it would have less vibration. I only run hill climbs/ time trials so my runs are usually only a couple of minutes at the longest.

Well I've used the Aiptek at a couple events now. It works well for the money and for what I need in a track camera. I have it mounted with an IOPort mount clamped to the factory rear tower bar. It's clamped over the foam cover, I expected that would allow too much movement, but it really isn't bad.

For some reason, the sound is completely out of sync when I use 60fps. It's fine at 30fps. I'm not sure if it's the camera or the software conversion that's causing this - Quicktime performs so poorly on windows that I can't even play the video downloaded straight from the camera. It just freezes and skips. I have to convert to a format that WMP can play, I've been using the XVID codec to encode it in MPEG4 as an AVI. Then it plays perfectly smooth.

I did the frankencharger mod from the Rennlist forums, which allows the camera to run off the car's electrical system rather than its internal battery. I also shimmed the battery to keep it from shutting off under heavy vibration. And I'm using a 0.45x wide angle lens, which gives the perfect field of view. Without it, you can see from the top of the windshield to about the AC controls. With it, from the top of the windshield all the way down to the bottom of the shifter, and to the A pillars on either side.

My 30 day trial of Corel Video Studio (formerly ULead) has expired. It was easy to use but I'm wondering if the others are better, like Pinnacle. They don't have a trial download for Pinnacle so I was wondering what you guys think.

Do you have a picture of how you mounted the IOPort mount to the rear bar? I just ordered one of these and was trying to think of a good way to mount it to the bar. My mount comes in on Monday and I'd like to get a head start on how to mount it since I want to use it at an event on the 14th of this month. I have some ideas but your setup sounds pretty simple.

Sorry, I keep forgetting to snap a photo. I just clamped it onto the stock rear tower bar, over the foam cover, and tightened it down until the two halves of the clamp met (cannot close the clamp down any further). I have it oriented so the camera mount base is facing toward the front of the car, this way the clamp is squeezing on the foam cover along its longer dimension. Sorry if that doesn't make sense, I'll take a photo when I get a chance. It's worth noting that the bar itself isn't thick enough for the clamp to fit, the foam is really holding it in place. This may be a problem with heavier cameras, but mine weighs something like 5 ounces. Also note the vinyl cover over the foam is split and basically ruined the way I have it (I personally don't care, my car's interior is nothing to look at).

As for editors, I tried Adobe Premiere Elements 7 and figured out how to export to an MPEG4 AVI using the XVID codec. Somehow the video was screwed up, it kept skipping frames and freezing and then crashed WMP after 10 seconds or so. Just from messing with it for a couple hours, PE7 is a slow, bloated memory hog like Photoshop and crashes a lot. I'm convinced that's not the editor for me.
