Harnesses (Searched)
 

I'm looking for a harness for my 1985 GS. I don't know where to start and don't know anything about safety equipment. I will be autox'ing the car and drifting this upcoming season. I am not sure what to look for, what to get. This car will be streetable but not a daily driver. Please direct me the right way on this. Thanks!

Well pretty much any SFI rated harness will work about the same. Pull up lap belts are easier to use. You really shouldn't use harnesses with stock seats and without a rollbar. You need the rollbar to give you a suitable place to mount harnesses. Anything else will be at too great of an angle to the horisontal, or too far back, which causes issues with spinal compression and belt stretching respectively. Seats need to be designed with harness slots to let them be properly positionned on your shoulders, or they're likely to slip off. They also need to be meant to run a sub belt, which keeps the lap belt from riding up into your gut when the shoulder straps are tightened. It's not safe to route the sub strap in front of the seat.

So, get racing seats and a rollbar, otherwise forget about running harnesses, it'll be LESS safe than the stock belts. You can get the stock belts to lock before you buckle in, then buckle in with them still tight, and it'll hold you in pretty well.

EDIT: Harnesses will drive you nuts on the street. You can't close the door, you can't shoulder check, you can't reach anything other than the driving controls pretty much. It also won't let you move around much in order to get re-positioned in order to stay comfy. Don't use harnesses on the street, besides, it just attracts attention (from cops and theives).

I can get seats, what would anyone recommend? Not an insane amount, but something fairly comfortable since I will be driving sometimes four hours for an autocross (Columbus OH to Louisville KY)

How big are you? If you're not too big then I'd say get a Momo Start, it's the cheapest FIA rated seat, so it's both inexpensive and safe, but it's not terribly large. Bolt it directly to the floor and it'll be as safe as possible, and you'll have as much room as possible. Stock sliders have a tendancy to break when mated to race seats, so leave them off, or get some good race quality ones. Seats that recline aren't racing seats and won't be as safe. If it's not FIA rated it should have a back brace on it connected to the rollbar to be safe.

I'm about 6'1, 200lbs. where would I get it? summit/jegs, etc? But since this will be an occasional driver/weekend racer, should I just keep the stock belts? I'm unsure on what to do.

For the street stock belts are the way to go. You can install the harnesses using clip in tabs on the ends that clip onto eye bolts. That way you can remove them when driving on the street. It's much more discrete that way.

For Momo seats, just google it and find the closest place (pickup to save on shipping), or the place with the lowest price.
