Harness SFI Certification
Dumb question here... With Simpson harnesses, there is a manufacture date on a little tag on each belt. However, there is only an SFI certification on the sub-belts (at least with my 6-point). The dates on my harness differ, because the harness was originally made in 1992, but appears to have been freshened in 1999 (at least that is what the SFI cert on the sub-belt seems to indicate). But at least with NASA (probably SCCA too), belts cannot be over 5 years old. Does anyone know which dates are the official ones that the NASA/SCCA tech guys go by? Anybody here run in GrandAm and happen to know the rules there?
I would know more about the harness, but I just bought the car recently, and the harness was already installed, so its history is a bit uncertain... The harness was originally installed in 1992, but has been freshened since then. |
usually the tag is on the outside lap belt(most belts I have seen) and this is the tag the tech guys go by. most sanctioning bodies have the 5 year rule. maybe the sub belt was not rewebbed with the others? might be worth your while to reweb the complete harness to be sure everything is in proper working order.

how much does it cost to reweb it? Does anyone actually do this safely (I have not even heard of anyone that does this)? it might be worth it just to buy another set or something...

I know RCI will replace the webbing for not much money on their own harnesses. (I have 2 rci harnesses in my car) The RCI guy said that simpson stopped re-webbing their own though...

I think Gene may be right about Simpson not rewebbing their products anymore. Sabelt, Pyrotect, Willans, and Crow will reweb there own harnesses. have not checked Simpson since the NASCAR/Simpson implosion after Earnhardt's death.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the help. I will just order a new one - if there is any doubt, it is probably best to go ahead and replace safety equipment anyways...

Simpson's new company is called"Impact Racing" (odd name). They have offered an exchange program in Grassroots Motorsports. For about $60 bucks I think, they will exchange a new one of theirs for your old one. Thats' cheap.

Simpson changed their name? Their products still seem to feature the Simpson name... Is Impact Racing possibly a distributor?

Bill Simpson sold the Simpson company. Later he formed a new company named Impact. Simpson is still around and the same company. Impact is new.
