Mike, as you most likely already know, recovering the costs(50% of them) of building a car like yours will take alot of patience. John Weisberg had to part his 2005 runoffs EP RX7, and he was looking for 20K. Sad, but true, best shot is to trade into the class you want to race in. Problem is anyone with 30K cash is not likely to want an RX3... I love your car, but it will take serious time to sell. Presumably it is listed on all the SCCA, and NASA regional forums, give it time, or part it, those are your choices. Good luck, Carl

Exactly right Carl,
I believe John's car was a 2nd gen. There have been 3 first gen EP cars parted out since the runoffs last season. Several of us here have been recipients of many of those parts inculding me. I'm not sure what the answer is. I've been trying to sell my ITA car for almost a year now. I figure I'll just keep it and run a few times a year.
If I had $30k to spend on a race car I would build an RX-8 or something newer. What most people who have never been there discount is the time it takes to build and develop a car.
Good luck selling her.

30K would cover just the drivetrain.

Plus, it's a tube frame, you can put any body you want on it.
Mazda was going to supply me with a RX8 body, but yhey
never built one.

tims 07-14-05 10:00 PM

Mike,

any detail photos for the chassis without the body installed? Interested but not in RX3 trim(sorry). It is a very nice setup, but I would like to see the chassis if possible. post here or email tim@wanaboo.com thanks

I figured it was a tub based car. Very nice.

My coments above were based on a T2 RX-8, these GT and production classes are too much work, and too much $$. My E car has been kicking my butt. Sometimes SSB looks pretty good.:)

Yeah, but then you've got all the cost of hiding illegal parts, illegal machining, etc.

A car that has been built to be a racecar from the ground up, is a lot less
maintence than a production car. A prod has to use many production parts
that aren't up to the stresses of racing (been there done that). Also in the
event of a crash, it's alot easier to cut and replace tubes, than to try to straighten
a tub car.

Until next year (IIRC) when SSB goes away ...

I remember watching the red 3 on Speed leading almost all of the race @ runoffs in 02. Real nice car, that bodywork and paint looked good on TV in the pre-race shots.

Mike's RX3 is one of the nicest GT cars out there. I have looked closely at it for the past several years at the Runoffs. Yes, it will be hard to get the desired money out of it without parting it, but it is turnkey and you can run up front at any SCCA race.

I am not all that familiar with the internals of the car - only what I can tell from observation - but always felt it was only limited by the RX3 aerodynamics. The thing is damn fast and looks like it handles great. Watching at Mid Ohio, I got a huge kick out of seeing this red brick with 30 year old aero lead cars that were $100k and above (ie, the Toyota's).

Mike, you should market it to the historic / vintaage guys. They have a lot more money than most of us!

Rich

PS - I bought Prather's EP tub when he parted out his RX7.

PRICE DROP.........$27500
Go pissin' with the big dogs for cheap.

Mike,
Who built the chassis?

Thanks,

No offence to you cpa but it pisses me off to no end when I hear some one say that. Why do people think it csts so litle to build a race car? I have built five t2 RX8's to date, each are $40k+ cars. A car like Mikes would cost $60k+ to duplicate and my car would be close to $40. Do you guys think that we would be dumb enough to try and sell these cars for what it would cost to build one?
Rant over sorry for the highjack Mike :(

Maybe cpa doesn't care about being competitive:)

Well Mr. Berg, sorry to piss you off. I meant no disrespect in regards to Mike's racecar for sale, and at $27500 it is certainly a bargain. I have never built a car from scratch so you got me there. I'm trying to build up my EP car right now so I do have some idea as to the costs involved. I am interested longer term on something on the lines of the RX-8, assuming I don't go over to the dark side. (Miata's) I guess to further explain my remark, I know it would cost more than $30k to get a front running RX-8, but am I that far off with just putting an RX-8 on the track? Since you build these cars for a living I would be a potential customer I guess. Can you send me a build sheet from one just completed? email pjpin@comcast.net

On another note, did you part your car out after the runoffs or sell it intact?

Well......somewhat true, I would just like to be on the lead lap at the end of the race, and maybe be in the front in a few local races. I'm just in this to have fun, at age 50 (in 2 weeks) I'm finally where I can afford to do this but I have lost that edge it takes to be in the front. :)

EProdRx7 08-02-05 11:12 AM

CPA,
I apologize for the rant but the financial bath I took on my car is still a bit fresh in my mind. I parted the car out and the fact that the shell is still hanging around my shop reminding me of it daily doesn't help. BTW I am trying to bring the remaining parts and a 3/4 built car to the runoffs this year. Hopefully it will sell then.
As for the RX8 figure $27k for the car or if you can find a wrecked one for $17 needing $5k worth of bodywork. Either way it's $25k. Cage that is worth a shit will be $3500-$4000, shocks $5k, MazdaSpeed strut bars, springs and swaybars$1200~ other safety bits and a seat$1500, three sets of wheels $2400, rains and two sets of tires $2200 Plus the labor to put it all together $4-5k and you are over $45k. I did this off the top of my head and this is just what you will need to get on the track. Now if you want to be competitive add in another 7-10 for a pro built motor, $8 for a Motec, $1k each for the trans and rear massage... and double the price of the wheels for the super light ones, and another $5k of labor and you are at close to $75k. It adds up fast! And this is a T2 car! No secrets here. Just the costs of racing.
If I added up all of the $ in my EP car plus running costs it would be well over $100k for the 6 seasons I raced it.
Now I hope this doesn’t scare you off and I wish you luck in getting you car done and on the track soon but please consider the knowledge and the value of the people that have "been there done that". We are not trying to get rich at this. That would be impossible. I do this because cubicles suck and this is what I love. Selling a race car is more an effort to recoup a small percentage of the fortune spent to build the car in the first place. As the old joke goes, “How doe you make a small fortune in racing? Start with a large one!
