goin rallycrossing. . .
ive autoxed for the last 4 years, since i turned 15. and since that time i've been taking my jeep, rx-7, and dad's cavalier on any and all dirt roads i can find. now there's a rallycross next weekend, and im trying to decide which car to take. which do you guys think would work out best? the 2002 cavalier completely stock. or the 84 gsl-se set up for autox but on really really horrible old all season bridgestones? i was kinda leaning towards the cavalier, but i'll have to get them both out and test them out again on dirt. just wonder your opinions on front versus rear drive.

Well you know my answer :p:

God damn! That looks like so much fun!!! I love my FD too much to ever do anything off the pavement with it...however, I bet the FC would make a damn fine rally machine! heheh
P.S. Is that really real?! |
84 would be an FB, no?
I guess the choice is, 'Do you want FWD or RWD?' A coworker of mine has what.. a Z23 (?).. Cavalier and says that it uses the ABS system to also do traction control, so that might be helpful in the conditions (if yours is similar).. Rolling your car is a lot more likely in RallyX than autocross (from what I've heard)-- catch a rut wrong, and over you go.. maybe the FB is more disposable? I can't see you _not_ having fun with either car.. |
remember that fc jessy james turned in to a offroad vechial adn shot the crap out of, (i think ti was suppose to be a sand rail) in anycase, fc's and fd's are good for onroad only (more fun in my opinoin)

I'd take the FB. I think you would have more fun in it. Also, even though I'd rather drive any type of FB over nearly any other car, the FB would be cheaper to replace should anything happen.

That FD rally pic will be embedded in my memory for all time...someone tell me if it's real or not!!!
|
Yes my pic is real. I was out to watch my first rally-cross and I wanted to make sure I did not race my truck. So I took my Fd because ther was no way on God's green earth I would ever get it muddy let alone dirt race it. Anyways I watched and rode with my friends all day and realized the track was pretty smooth. The time came for the fun runs and I had to take the FD out at least once. It ran awesome and I had a blast. My friend caught the pic as I was drifting onto the main straightaway. It only got a little muddy and was promptly powerwashed to showroom shine again.

One of our members did a rallycross once in his FD. I watched the video, it looked like total fun. It's something I'd like to do at least once. He had to drive to Georgia to go to one though.

Did that guy have a silver FD? If so that course was rough as hell. I rallyx my 323 GTX all the time.
|
Yup, silver FD. Did it quite some time ago, I think maybe April or May of 2002.
|
The last rally cross I ran at, with my truck, there was a 323 GTX running 18 psi on toluene. He just killed everyone else. He had it airborne a couple of times.
