Fuel pump for Fuel Cell
 
If I plan on, down the road, using a fuel cell, I will need an external fuel pump, right? Just checking.

Also, does anyone with experience know the volume (noise) difference between any of the pumps. ie Aeromotive, Bosch, SX, etc.

ATL and Fuel Safe both have fuel cells and parts to convert fuel cells to in cell fuel injected setup. ASA( a stock car racing group) uses a Vortec fuel injected V8 and ATL makes a cell that incorporates a high volume fuel pump for the fuel injection. they also sell a drop in surge tank that contains a high pressure fuel pump for EFI called the "black box". external is always an option. all those listed will work and depending on how loud your exhaust is will be noisy.

Also in this months issue of Racecar Engineering ATL announced a new dual bosch pump assembly that fits in one of the coverplate locations.

As an ATL dealer, I would love to sell the black box setup. However, as a racer (and a man w/ a conscience) I think you can do better by piecing the deal together.

First, the ATL pump isn't the best pump. It's an average pump, but when priced with the other components, you end up spending too much money on the pump.

Here's what you do:

Buy the 3-door surge tank (PN ST528) for $155. You will also need the bulkhead fitting which allows the wiring for the pump to pass through the top plate (PN CFD-504) for $14. Then you supply your own pump. The trick is to run a hose on the inside of the cell and dump it into the surge tank. That way the pickup always has a constant supply of fuel from the return.

For reference, ATL wants $389 for the whole black box setup. So if you find a reasonably priced pump, you can save some cash.

I had wondered what the price was for the "black box", but I did like the setup. I am going to add a fuel cell to my car latter this year and I already have the nice pump, so what is an ATL 18-22 gallon fuel cell with an accumulator going for these days?

It really depends on what you want for the bladder. I have not tried a surge tank in the hard rubber bladders, so I'm not even sure it's an option.

ATL SP115 - $406.80
ATL SP122 - $466.80
-dual pickups, steel can, hard rubber bladder, foam baffling included

ATL SU115 - $637.20
ATL SU122 - $729.60
-dual pickups, steel can, HD rubber coated fabric bladder, foam baffling included

I have Fuel Safe cells as well for those with a preference.

You will simply have to add the price of the surge tank into the cost of the cell you choose.

that's what I thought about $800-$900 for the complete unit. I think it is worth the extra money for the better bladder material. Fuel Safe is basicly the same price? does ATL OR Fuel Safe have a low fuel level switch, not a guage but a contact that trips a ;ight when the fuel is low? I have seen a couple endurance cars with this but didn't know how it was done. I'll email you when I get ready to install the cell.

Try looking at the Weldon pumps. There simply isn't a better pump out there. THey flow more than any other on the market.

A Weldon external pump is mucho overkill for nearly any 13B setup but are definately top of the line and rebuildable which is good. This should be classifieds as a race only pump and their life span is rated in hours! Expect a loud buzz as well. $500 or more I think You can email/call them and get a free catalog also
BTW- SRracing is waaaaaaaay pricey.....

A better choice IMO would be an Aeromotive external pump. Around $350 I think and can support 800hp. My friend runs one and it supports his 530rwhp/580rwtq supercharged 383 LT1 V8 with ease. It too has a loud buzz continually.... but the sound of a race 13B will drown it out.

Bosch makes a nice external pump also for around $250. A Bosch 286 will support about 500hp. Came factory in the 930 Turbo Porsche :).

A Walbro 340 unit can be purchased as an external pump and they are only $120! They are most known for their intank pumps though (I run one). The 340 when hot wired with 14 volts to the pump will support over 700hp at the flywheel!!!! (Precision Turbo & Engine in Hebron, IN tested 5 different units and they all supported over 700hp). They ran 40psi base fuel pressure, -6AN fuel line, and 14 volts to the pump. Then the FP was increased to 65psi (under boost conditions) and it still could support over 700hp. Good bang for the buck.

Fuel pumps, air filters, and more

Fast 2day express delivery and great customer service. ANy ?'s about external pumps and ratings.... just call him.

I run the stock FC fuel tank with Walbro 340 intank, with 3/8" high pressure hose into a Moroso fuel block "Y." One of the inlets has been blocked with a brass 3/8" plug. It is a dual 3/8" inlet with a -8AN outlet. I run -8AN to the fuel rail and use -6AN to the stock feed as my return line. -8AN will support upwards of 800hp.

Eventually with a larger turbo I'll have the 340 as my main pump and then drill a hole in the fuel pickup cover and have a 3/8" pickup line going in next to the factory unit. Then that will have 3/8" line going to a Bosch 286 pump then into the Moroso "Y" block and they merge into the -8AN line to the rail. The 2nd pump will be activated by a Hobbs switch which is a pressure activated switch where you set the pressure (boost) where you want it to activate the pump. This setup will support 1000hp+. I only need about 700hp to support so the extra fuel will be diverted to the return line when under boost.
