Fuel Cell question
 

Hey everyone,

I just picked up a 15 Gallon polycarbonate Fuel cell for my 1st gen TII project. I got a good deal on it for the fact that it was meant for circle track, meaning it has the corner pickup.. It is however full of the safety foam. My 2 questions are, will the corner pickup be a large problem on a street driven car even with the foam inside? Also the pickup fitting is on the TOP of the tank, so it does not have a sump. I was told that if i use the top fitting, my electric pump (MSD) will burn out eventually as it should be gravity fed for better performance, BUT the stock tank is also a top feed tank with the external inline fuel pump, so i dont understand what the difference is between using the stock tank or the cell. So what i was told that i should do was to add a pickup at the bottom so that it will be gravity fed even without the sump.
Let me know your thoughts.

If it was meant for a round track car, then the pickup is in the right rear of the tank. That will not cause any problems for street use.


The pickup fitting is at the top of the cell, but the end of the pickup is located in the bottom of the fuel cell.
Mount your pump equal to or lower than the cell. Once the line to the pump is primed, then gravity will be on your side (think of syphoning gas out of a tank.)

The top pick up fitting is fine, all fuel cell are like that.
Do not remove the inside foam, you will loose all the use of the cell, as far as the right side pick up it coild be an issue when you runn low on fuel. 2 way to solve.
get a staigh line ( bende the pick up or cut it short to striaght down) or just by a new 1. very cheap, you may also want to use a sump tank inside more expensive but much better system.

I got a question related this, be it a stupid one....what kind of fuel level sender do you use with a fuel cell, gotta know how much is left right?

Fuel Safe makes a pretty good fuel cell sender for fuel level gauges.

The sender has two concentric tubes. The tubes can be cut to length to match the depth of your fuel cell. As the gasoline level rises and falls between the two tubes, it changes the capacitance of the tubes, and the electonics located in the hockey puck shaped piece on top amplify that signal and convert it to standard voltage to drive a gas gauge. There are two trimmer pots on top of the electronics, that you can adjust to "empty" and "Full" readings.

I have used one in my race car fuel cell since 1997, and it has been 100% reliable.
