Fuel Cell installation
 

I would be interested in seeing a few pictures of how fuel cells are installed.

I am going to install one in my auto-xer. Do you need to fab a metal tube housing to protect a metal enclosed bladder or can you cut and drop it through with just two mount supports and bolt it down?

Any comments on a prefer brand of fuel cell? Since this is for an auto-x only application, I am looking at a maximum 5 gal cell (maybe 8 gal).

Most of the people I know, cut out the spair tire hole and replace it with a flat plate of 22 or so gage sheet metal. They then place the cell under the new sheet metal. The plastic cells from Jaz and RCI work fine on an auto-X car. Stay away from the aluminum cells as the mounting tabs are on the wrong side of the cell. Their made to put inside the trunk, up hi for drags. Get a lo-dollor Jaz drag cell, with the two pick-ups in the bottom rear. You'll need the mounting straps reguardless of what cell you buy. One note- stay away from the cheap plastic cells from Jegs/Summit if you ever plan on doing anything on a track. You'll need an FIA FT3 certified cell from ATL or Fuel Safe.

Oh so true, but you can always sell it to a dirt racer later. ATL and Fuel Safe both ask that the blatter be replaced every five years too. DICK.

I just installed a 15 gal Fuel Safe in my FC. I used the stock tank location and it fit perfectly. I even used the stock pump and wiring with modified fuel gauge sender.
I did have to make a new top plate for fuel cell to do this but it came out very nice.
Any sized smaller cell should fit without problem. You will need to make brackets to hold the cell and you may need to cut the floor in front of the spare tire area for access. try to use the stock filler location for a nice clean look.

I think a 5 gal. cell is enough to get two drivers through a day of autocrossing. It's cutting it close on a two day event though.
That's what I'm going to with.

Why would you want to run with all that extra weight? Refilling is simple.

The critical factor should be the balance of the car. I will mount the cell with 2-3 gal of fuel, pending the data from the scales.

Do you mean refilling between days or between runs? Of course adding gas at the start of the day is easy. Between runs would be a hassle.
Come to think of it... we only added 2.5 gallons each day (half of our 5 gallon jug) and never ran out or had any starvation issues. So you're probably right. 3 gallons should get two drivers through a day.
