First time at the track...

Well i went to the dragstrip for the first time tonight. Atlanta Dragway in Commerse. It was fun but i could not figure out how to launch the car, maybe it was my tires, really sucky eco tires, probably treadware about 1,000,000. Well anyway best time of the day was a 15.111, man it sucked. that was with a 2.592 60' time at 96.58 mph. The best 60' time i got was a 2.202 but i missed 3rd so that sucked. The best part of the day was my reaction times, nothin worse than .433 with my best r/t of a .057 :D , 60' 2.211 but only made a 15.225 1/4 mile (missed third/ couldnt get into third). Anyway i made 8 runs, car did fine temp wise, only wish i could get my launch better. I was trying different rmps all night, 3000, 3500, 4500 , could never find a good one. What do you guys normally launch at? Plus do u do a burnout to help heat the tires up? I tried but i really had never done one before, "just rev it up and dump the clutch" right?

I have an 89 Turbo 2, RB turbo back exhaust, hks filter, FCD, removed air pump, boost at 10 psi, just broken-in rebuild.

Also i have some ACT clutch that is really stiff, pretty heavy clutch, dont know what it is , it came on the car when i bought it.

Bump, somebody give him some launching advice.

The only time I dragged was in my friend's slipping-clutch GXL on a very slippery track, and my best was 16.80 (and his Atkins streetport does scream).

I do know that burnouts are for racing slicks only, not street tires.

well it wasnt a burnout per se, more like a wheel spin for half a second. But yea wouldnt mind some launching advise because i am going back this friday. I am putting better tires on this time, 225'' on the back, only a little bigger but that is all i got that has a rim that will match up, plus they have a little better tire, proxy 4's. Ok but not meant for drag.

i get the best launchs by holding it at 5k, slip it maybe 1/4 of the way out, at a "medium" pace, then dump it.

doing this preloads the drivetrain, and tires, so breaking stuff isn't such a big worry, i get zero wheel hop, and the tires dont get blown away. remember it's the big jerk that breaks stuff....usually

how big were you tires? I dont know if my tires would be a ble to stick from 5k even if i slip the clutch out.

sorry, I have 225/50/16 hankook rs-2's. My last set of tires yoko es100's in the same size couldnt hold WOT in first gear, even if i slowly rolled into the gas from a roll.

why were your 60fts so bad? were you getting wheel hop, spin, or bogging?

for what it's worth, i also have an agressive street port, 12lb flywheel, act street disk with the heavy duty flywheel, and a to4e hybrid...so my car needs some rpm to leave the line quick.

yea my car is fairly stock, just a few bolt-ons. But still have crap 205's. Being my first time at the track and actually my first time really launching the car, bought the car with a new rebuild in it, and i just finished breaking it in, plus it is my first manual car, so still working on shifting. I think my 60' times were bad because of inexperience, bad tires, and a shitty track (there were pieces of rubber on trhe track and the guys would not clean them off). Um " were you getting wheel hop, spin, or bogging?" well dont really know, i think it would spin bad/ wheel hop dont really know and then bog down really bad at the launch.
