First gen rear axle swap
 

Looks like I have a good find on a disc brake rear axle assembly for our IT7 POS-7. Any one swapped out a drum rear to a disc rear on a first gen? Any trouble spots beyond R&R? I need to do a bit of research on the existing braking system to see what else needs to be changed (proportioning valve, hard/soft lines and such). Just wanting to see if there is some knowledge to be gained before I start on the project.

Our vehicle is an 85 model prepped to SCCA IT7/ITA specs.

Is it a 84-85 rear end?

The entire assemblies bolt directly in. You will need the rear sections of the e-brake cables if you plan to hook them up.

I did this swap on my '85 GS. I did not change out the master cylinder or proportioning valve and everything works great, although others may tell you that changing those items out is necessary. Everything is very straightforward and simple to do.

You might want to grab some urethane bushings, and maybe some S.S. brake lines, brake pads, etc. Best place on Earth to get stuff like that is www.re-speed.com They are highly involved in our forum and help us out with requests for new parts and stuff. Billy (Bwaits) even piped in on your thread already. So its always good to keep your business "in the family" whenever possible. :)

Already used Re-speed for a few items after seeing how involved they were with the group on here! Definitely good to support our supporters.

I will get some further research done today on the additional parts needed for this. I got some help from another racer about driveshaft flanges and their differences between years so I'll take a close look at that. The axle assembly I'm getting is out of an 84 so in theory it should be a straight bolt on. Thanks for the suggestions too!

Yep, since it is from a 84 it is a big bearing rear end to match your big bearing front struts. The drive shaft flange will also be the correct one. Should just bolt in and go.

Just a quick note on fluids for the LSD. I used Royal Purple, which claims that it already has the LSD "addative" in it. But when I drove the car, the rear end chattered like crazy. I added a tube of standard LSD addative, and it was fine after that.

If I had to do it again, I would not pay the premium for the RP lube.
