FD 18 x 10 wheels for track
 

Hi guys !

I know there has been many threads about the wheel fitment and offset, but it's hard to tell if those discussion were for track car or street cars, which can have vastly different requirements.

So for those of you who have used 18 x 10" wheels for track duty. What offset will work?
Assuming aftermarket coilover shocks are installed, and fender rolling is non-issue like most tracked FD.

I've been told 18 x 10" +52 or +50 is a proven setup. Is this correct?
At this width is there any touching of body/fender/frame at full lock?
Are there any clearance issues front or back?
Are there any height limitations?

The idea is to run 265/35/18 tires with 18 x 10" all around.

*Yes i know you can run it on 18 x 9.5, but i would like to use the 10" wheel for better sidewall control of the tire.

With those tires the +50 is probably OL.

I run 285/30/18 on that size wheel, and on the rear a 5mm spacer is required to keep the tires of the aftermarket trailing arms.

The 'offset' term is such a pain, I wish we could refer just to backspacing, which does not change with wheel width.

BTW, you will probably want to roll the lip down on the wheel arches.

I like backspace measurements to tell if the wheel will fit on the car.

For example, we know 7.5" backspace fits a wheel comfortably with coilovers on an FD.

I like offset measurements to tell me if the tire will fit on the car.

For example we know that with moderate camber (2-3 degrees front, 1-2 degrees rear) +45 offset will fit the widest tire possible on an FD (295 fender lips rolled under/coilovers) so every 1mm from 45 offset can fit 2mm less tire width.

I believe he stated he runs the standard FD track fitment of 285mm wide tires on 18x10 +50 front and and back (except with 5mm spacer for 18x10 +45 rear as he has aftermarket trailing arms that take up a bit more space).

The 18x10 with 265 tire you want to run will fit with an offset between +50 to +35 with coilovers and a fender roll.

Before my current 18x11 +45 w/ 295s (requires shortened front swaybar for full steering lock) I ran 18x10.5 +38 w/ 265s.

The rear trailing arms are Improved Racing (no longer available) and are offset for clearance. Even so, there was enough rubbing to warrant the 5mm spacer.

There's a 5mm spacer on the front as well, but that is just to deal with a rotor hat to wheel hub flange clearance issue.

The Forgestar wheels have ginormous hub flanges that do not clear the bolts on my Coleman rotor hats by about 3mm.

I decided to get a set of 18 x 10.5 +30 offset Enkei NT03M.
Front fender will be replaced with Feed, and rear fender is already rolled.
Tire will be 285/30/18 TD

I was oggling those as well as I love that wheel and they were close enough to pick up.

Those 18x10.5 +33 would fit my rolled fender FD with 265s.

You are going to have to do a big pull in the rear to get 285s to fit in back.

Go slow with heat and pull the fender out and then contour the lip up instead of the trying to just roll the lip up and you should be able to get it without dimpling the fender above the wheel well.

I ran 265/35-18 Ventus TDs on my 18x10.5 +38 and I prefer the softish TD sidewall slightly stretched like this to provide better steering response/feedback.

My next set of 295 TDs on 18x11 +45 felt a little lazier than the 265s.

You can always start with 265 TD on that 18x10.5 +33 stock rolled rear and rolled/pulled front and work into the 285 set with pulled rear and wide fender front.

Looks like your gonna need to go wide body or a super roll on the rear fenders. Any rubbing on the inner fender wells?

I'm on 18x10+50 with 275/35 and only have a problem at full lock.

Nope. None.

I'm actually consulting on this build for MotoIQ's newest Project FD "Restomod" RX-7. I've had quite a bit of street time on them and without saying too much that will already be in the article, they are fantastic street tires. They are very quiet, like the Conti Extremecontact Sports and Michelin PS4S' that I've had on my daily drivers - what I consider two of the best well-rounded street/performance tires on the market. Yet, this tire is a 200-treadwear competition "street" tire designed to go up against the A052, RT660, Cup 2 (240), RE-71, etc... and it definitely is more track-focused than the EC Sport or PS4S. I also plan on track-testing them soon and am excited to see how they perform.

Conti needs to release more sizes in the EC Force...... no 255/35 or 265/35-18 is not cool for FD guys.

There are very few FD's running 20' wheels, and this thread will be of no help to you. IMO if you wna run 20's, you have no choice but to modify the fenders.

im only puting the 20" because im puting brembo z20 with 400mm discs!!!
only for show off but i still want to drive the car!!

The issue is front tire overall diameter must be 25.3" or under for FD RX7 or it will hit headlight area and back/bottom of fender when turning.

You needshortest 20" tire like 215/30-20 or something up front then.

even a 245/30-20 is almost 26” OD, this simply is not the car for doing that kind of …

I’ve been really holding back on giving you my honest assessment on your question and restraints. I’ll instead say it’s a situation beyond needing help, a non-consensual intervention is more accurate wording for what’s needed. :suspect:

Very nice!

Rays also now makes a 18x11 +45 5×114.3 TE37 Saga S Plus for BMWs that will fit FD for those wanting more sidewall response on a 295/30-18 or wants to run 315/30-18.

But its stiffer and heavier because its made for heavy cars.

That is the wheel spec I use since 2013, but on a China wheel.

Big camber and a roll needed? Or, just a fender roll?
I do like the look of the TE37's a bit more than the ZE40's.
