which FC flywheel?

Hi guys, thinking about getting a lightweight flywheel for my track FC. Any reccomendations as to which one is best?

Alex-7 02-16-06 03:03 PM

Light as poss if it's a track only car.

Racing beat.

For your ITS car? That'd be illegal. Otherwise any of the major, reliable companys. I like RB as well.

designfreak 02-16-06 04:02 PM

yeah, I know it would be illegal in It-S, but im thinking of changing direction in the build a bit. Ive been steadily loosing interest in the local scca, so I'm toying with a couple of ideas and this is part of it. The car already was built around a 2 seat cage, so well see.

I always think of rebuilding my car for SPO. It's not that the speeds of the S car aren't satisfying but I'd love to be able to play with the car more than what the IT rules allow. I don't blame you for looking in another direction.

ACT

ive heard that a lightwheel flywheel helps to reduce low end torque from the loss of the rotational momentum. it may be a bunch of crap, but unless its a permanent track vechile, wouldnt that be less than desireable.

designfreak 02-17-06 09:27 AM

It should help torque by allowing the engine to rev faster, and more freely. The car is a track only car so either way im only gonna be using the uper third of the tach.

Racing Beat seems to be the one pushed by most of the racing suppliers around, but does anyone have any info on manufacturers like ACT, EXEDY, FIDANZA, and UNORTHODOX RACING?

Ive heard great things about all of these manufacturers, but am looking for the best price/performance break here.

RETed 02-17-06 10:41 PM

ACT is cheaper.
ACT is also one piece.
ACT is chrome-moly.

I think the RB unit is two-piece - they steal the stock ring gear and then weld it back onto their centers?

The ACT units should also be slightly lighter than the RB's, but this is moot cause it's about rotational mass. :)

you can buy the ring gear seperate from mazda, thats what rb does, they have boxes of em in the wherehouse.

i have an act at home and the price was good, but its around 14lbs, on paulie's scale, so the rb is lighter. its nice, but if i didnt have the counterwieght already the rb one is a better deal

diabolical1 02-19-06 02:23 AM

Racing Beat aluminum here. :)

Hmmm...ACT makes a Streetlite and a Prolite version, at least for the turbos.
Dunno if the non-turbos are the same?
The Prolite is lighter.

Last time I checked, the ACT flywheels was $225?
Add a $120 CW, and it's still under $350.
The RB combo is around $400?

As far as weight it depends on what website you read the info from. I've seen quotes all over the map. Some quote the weight with the counter weight others don't. Doesn't matter because there isn't an 225mm ACT available. RB says their NA flywheel is 12lbs. RX-7 Store says it's 9.5.

The RB flywheel is multipiece because aluminum doesn't make a good ring gear material or friction surface for the clutch. It's exactly like the Fidanza. I'm guessing someone makes the RB piece for them. Just a guess. The ring gear isn't welded on...aluminum to steel...it's bolted in place.

FWIW ACT flywheels are forged from steel. Since they're not made of aluminum there is no need for a seperate clutch friction steel to be bonded/bolted to the flywheel. The material difference is probably the reason for the difference in price.

I don't think Exedy makes an NA version either.

And FWIW, I like to support RB when I can because they've been with the rotary community from the start and remain here. They're good on the phone and have always provided good support and technical answers when I've asked. Great people that make great parts.

FWIW i remember reading somewhere (may have been here on this forum) that Fidanza actually makes the flywheels for RB ...

i have the RB aluminium one, and i love it. ive had none of the problems that people expect from a light flywheel. :)
