just wondering
i want to do my exhaust, i have 1 more track day left for the year and 1 race left. i ran the stock exhaust and i've been getting left behind at the end of the straights.
i went to a shop and they want $150 to go from the end of the stock header to the back of the car with straight pipe. could i just do this on my own with pep boys parts and it would be cheaper? my local track does not have noise restrictions. would i gain hp? i know it would be alot lighter. i don't have the money in the budget for much more this year as i'm trying to get a trailer. should i just run it like it is and wait until next year and get the header and the rest done at the same time?
any ideas?????????? what size pipe?
88 na, i do have the cone filter intake and i gues you can tell this is a road race car.

You could get sections of pipe and weld them in place of cats/mufflers. You could also gut out the cats and mufflers if you really want to save $.

Don't bother taking it over the axle. Just bring it straight back from the maniold and end with a 45* turn-down before the axle. This should save the shop a lot of time and will give you a bit more power.

Over stock (w/ cats), a straight-pipe is worth a considerable amount of power. However, the car will not be streetable (too loud) without some sort of muffler.

DO NOT end the pipe UNDER the car, rotaries like to throw HUGE flames out Straight pipes and can very easily light the car on fire - Run the pipe out under the right side rocker just in front of the rear wheel if you don't want to go up over the rear axel.

I've seen pipes that come out and exit 45 just in front of the rear wheel, and I've seen them dump under the car... I agree about the concern about the flames, especially first gens, they seem to spew flames on deceleration.. I havaent' seen much flamage from mine however.

150$ isn't too bad if it's mandrel bent tubing, that's about what mine cost..

i'm pretty sure i'll try something this weekend. but what do i have to do to the port / air pump stuff if i take off the cats? i'm still not to clear on all that.

You wire the 6 ports open, dump the air pump, and you remove the ACV and install a blockoff plate.

You shouldn't be racing below 3800 RPM anyway.
