Diff problems.....
 

......I'm trying to get my car ready for the upcoming race season and I'm having a diff problem.

A quick background...I bought an '81 IT7 RX7 race car from a guy near Boston who got it for his daughter to race, but she never made it to the track so he sold it to me (I live in Ontario). He's a drag racer so road racing and imports aren't his thing.

When the car is going straight it's fine, no noise or chatter at all, but when I turn to the left or right more than a bit the inside rear wheel starts to chatter on the pavement like it wants to turn at the same speed as the outside wheel. There is no play in the axles and I drained the diff fluid and it was real clean with no filings stuck to the mag drain plug.

Maybe the wrong fluid was in it??

Any help would be great, the race season is coming soon!!!

sounds like the diff may be welded as a posi unit. Jack one side rear up and leave the other on the ground. Try to rotate the wheel that is off the ground. If it does not try to spin the diff is probably welded. Which isnt all that bad for road racing.

So the car can be road raced like this???

Could be welded, or it could be the wrong fluid. Refill it, but make sure you add the LSD addative which is needed for the LSD to function properly... When I installed my LSD rear end, I used Royal Purple, which states on the bottle that no addative is necessary. Chattered like a bitch, so I picked up a tube of the addative and that straightened it out nicely.

i really wouldnt road race with a welded diff, for me its so easy to oversteer into a turn. it wouldnt make your times faster unless you liike sliding around :)
