Desiging front spliter for FD - Cwest bumper
 

Hay guys.

Im looking to mock up a simple splitter for the front of my FD. It has a Cwest front bumper with quite a bit of ground clearance....about 80-90mm.

What Im wondering is how far back to run it and what angle I should try for as it goes under the front?

do a search for my name and 'splitter' or 'undertray'

Looking at the options, what woud you recomend for for thicknesses

Alloy - 2,3,4mm?

Plywood - 5,6mm?

Fibreglass/carbon - 4mm?

Also any idea of weights for each?

Damian, do know what the individual Dzus fasteners are rated at? The retaining clip is rather scrawny and that front lip looks like it would be making a lot of downforce at speed. Have you been running that setup for very long? It looks very convenient and functional.

80 cobillion giga pounds..... in other words, I have no idea :-)

The downforce is spread across the entire surface, so in the end each fastener take a smaller precent of the force.

Best advice I can give mount it to the chassis, not the bumper. You can have the bumper attach to it but don't use the bumper as the means to attach it to the body.

although I do attach mine to the bumper, I also attach it to the subframe, that is where it gets its horizontal stability from, so the splitter ends up giving horizontal stability to the bumper via the subframe support via the splitter.

one I have time to design a new rebar, it will provide support for a splitter, that would be ideal, so that all its support is from the car frame, and the nose just 'sits' on the splitter

Large flat plates are not very strong structurally. The underside needs to be flat, but the top side can have stiffener ribs added to make it stiffer and stronger.

putting it another way, if you run without stiffener ribs, then you must make it very thick (and heavy)

with stiffeners added to the upper surface, then the plate can be made much thinner.

I use .040" thick (1 mm) aluminum sheet with stiffeners added to the upper surface. I make the stiffeners out of sheet alum, and rivet them to the upper surface, so that my lower surface stays nice and smooth. Stiffeners can be C sections or hat sections.

Sorry to drag this back up again guys, but im actully interested in the other end of the car now.

Does anyone have any pics of a car with a rear diffuser on a hoist? I just want to see how the leading edge attaches to the underbody.
