Convertables good in autocross?

I am excited about running autocross at the Rotary Revoultion and was wondering how my car would match up to the other RX-7s in autocross. It turns like it is on rails and I don't have to wait for a turbo to spool up so I think I would do pretty good. Do turbos help in autocross? Since its a '89 I don't have air bags(save on weight) but do have the S5 engine. Is this going to be a good car for autocross? All of my mods are in my signature.

Would I be able to keep up with FDs or beat them (car to car) in autocross?

Cars don't win autcross events. Drivers do.

I said car to car, I know the driver is a big part. All I want to know is what makes for a good autocross car, what model 7 is best? I guess I will know at the end of the month for sure.

The lighter cars are better. Best would prbably be the GTUs or the Sport modles.
The FD is an autocross MONSTER. Driver is the only factor that gets you past one.

S5 vert is the heaviest RX-7 made and has the worst power to weight ratio.

The coupe S5's were about 150-200lbs heavier than the S4 models due to additional door and under dash bracing, automatic seat belts, and some other stuff.

'87 Sport model would be a good choice or a base model and then add GXL LSD diff out back with 15" BBS convertible rims and very short 225's.

AutoX relies much on driver skill.... but having a better car to begin with will certainly help.
