Cheapest Way to Ship an Engine
 

I know this is a bit off topic, but what is the cheapest way to ship and engine from one coast to another? (I put it here since some of you may have this experience). So, they weight under 330 lb and are often shipped on a pallet. What do you recommend? How have you done it? What has it costs you?

You'll have to ship by truck for it to be "cheap". Just put it on a pallet and strap/chain it down really well. You may have to cut out some of the pallet or set the motor on a tire to keep it level on the pallet. Just call around to LTL trucking companies and see what kind of quotes you get. It won't be very cheap, I promise.

Believe LTL is not a company but an acronym for Less Than Load. Just look in the yellow pages for freight companies and start calling for quotes. You will most likely need to haul the engine on pallet down to their dock unless you want to pay through the nose for residential pickup. I've shipped several engines with R&L and it's usually $200-250 to ship across three or four states.

Try DHL... just make sure you tell them its frieght as opposed to a parcel

You need to crate it up yourself.... drive it down to their terminal (they ship via airplane), then they find surplus space on a plane and it goes out within 1-5 days to the destination. The pickup must be made at their terminal.

Cheapest I've found by far. Cheaper than trucking companies. Look on their website for locations.

I'm going to go ahead and tell you not to use a parcel company (UPS, FedEx, DHL) to move freight. They try to move your freight in the same manner they move their parcels and it's a flat out nightmare. If you saw how your freight was handled with these companies, you would never even contemplate using them.

Use a trucking company that does less-than-load (LTL) shipments. You'll take it to their terminal, they'll put it on a truck, and it will likely stay there until it gets to their destination terminal. Much safer way of shipping freight.

You can save about $40 or so by taking it to the freight terminal yourelf, and another $40 on the other end by having the person receiving it go down to the receiving freight terminal and pick it up himself instead of having it delivered to his house.
