Cheap Pyrometer.
 

I just bought a cheap pyrometer from Radio Shack. I thought some of you road racers might be interested in one like it .I'm going to try it out in february. Does anybody have one like this? I was wamdering how accurate it is compared to a more expensive one. The specs seem OK as long as you don't get to far away from the tire (3 to 1 distance to spot size). Paid $50.00. That's alot cheaper than the other ones that I looked at.

Sounds great, this will get you in the ball park.

But you really need one with a probe to get accurate numbers.

Not bad, but I agree, you need to get into the tread to get accurate tire temps. I got one (needle type) from racepartswholesale IIRC and it was less that $100. But that one (infrared) is handy for shooting rad temps, brake temps, stuff like that though.

the infrared is what alot of pro teams use but you need to look at the spot size. this is the area it takes the temp. the shack model is 3:1 or 4" circle at one foot. for tire temps you need to get inside, middle and outside of the tread face temp numbers to be useful. I don't think your running 12" tires so make sure you are close to the tire and maybe borrow a fellow racers point type pyrometer to check the accuracy. some of the nice pistol type infrared pyrometers can be bought for around $150. Some digital multimeters have optional temp probes that are very accurate, so if you have a nice meter maybe the add on probe would be cheeper. this is not the most expensive tool you will need to buy to road race successfully.
