Building a Fuel Cell
 

I am going to be replacing my plastic fuel cell by building my own Aluminum one.

My current fuel cell is not sumped, simply a corner pickup with foam... Since i already have my fuel lines run, i was planning to do a similar build.

The only real difference i was planning to do was to place the pickup line in the centre. Since the tank will be filled with foam, is there any reason to make any baffles?

A fuel cell is more than just an aluminum can. What you want to build wouldn't be legal as a cell. A normal cell has a bladder inside a steel or aluminum box.

Nor would it be safe.

Look for an ATL or Fuel Safe cell. What you can build is a surge tank if you wanted to build something, or just buy one.

If you still insist on building a cell, I have (2) ATL duck foot pickups #TF239 - 6AN that list for $50.40 each but you can have both for $40 shipped. Put one on the RT and LT.

Aluminum cells have no baffles, just the bladder if you are racing in SCCA/NASA. Drag race aluminum cells has foam and no baffles and are really cheep and come in many sizes and shapes. Look at Summit and Jegs for drag cells. Many to choose from.

If you are running a sanctioned event check the rules for build and safety specs. I have built quite a few for the local drag tracks with out any problems at all. Can't do it for SCCA though, they require SFI certifications.

Actually the SCCA requires an FIA certified cell where fuels are required (Production, GT, etc). In Improved Touring a cell is not required and a cheaper, non FIA cell may be used in place of the stock tank.

I have an ATL cell in my car. It has a rotary molded bladder, is foam filled, is in an aluminum can and is FIA GT3 certified.

Whatever you do, please dont endanger the lives of yourself, your family and your friends and collegues. Fuel is fire and dealing with fire needs your utmost care...what a second post.
