Budget race carb/intake; suggestions?

I have read all the threads, in particular the contentious Holley vs Sterling thread of a year ago. I'm trying wrap my head around the best solution for under $500. This is a race/autocross car only. Header exhaust, but no engine work (porting and such).

The Sterling sounds like a great solution, but the manifold issue is huge. Sterling says some manifolds (late model, like the '85 I have) flow as little as 288 cfm. Doesn't seem to make much sense putting on a 465 cfm if you can only get 288 to the motor.

The Holley is either loved or hated. Why? For a pure road race car, does it make sense?

All the two barrel solutions seem to be out of my price range. Am I missing any budget solutions? Bike carbs?

Thanks.

I've been using a Sterling on mine for about five years now. Never had an issue with it, and the power increase is great. Driveability was important for me, because this is a daily driver and weekend racer. The Sterling is always as smooth as silk.

Check out some of my videos, and you can get an idea of what to expect. :)
