breaking a turbo motor in...
 

A friend of mine is breaking in a rebuilt turbo II motor w/ a bridge port. And my question is, how many miles is good untill its broken in. Reason for my question is we're running it at MOROSO sometime this week if it has enough miles. Thanks!

a couple hours of use should be fine. most people recomend 500 miles of easy driving at varied rpm. are you drag racing or road racing? change the oil check all the belts and hose connections and have some fun.

Not to hijack but i have a simiar question

I plan on building a highcomp turbo motor, its not together yeat (still collecting parts) but am worried about stressing the motor while breaking it in. Ive read that im suppoto keep the engine out of boost during inital break in. Now with my 9.7:1 rotors im worried im goign to be boosting at a low load and/or low rpm. Should i be worried? And if so how should i stop the engine from boosting? Large wastegate? Restrictive intake/exhaust? Combination of both?

Well, its not only going to be for racing. Its also a daily driver. Its got about 400 on it now and I planned on taking it to MOROSO either wednesday or friday night. I considered friday nigth so that i could break in it farther. So I guess it should be fine by then. Thanks alot!

If your doing a rebuild only, there's nothing to "break in". If the only thing new is your corner seals, apex seals, and side seals. Give it two heat cycles, change the oil and go race. I broke my new engine in with 28psi on the dyno as did Demetrios. Hell, he has over 180 dyno pulls and over 50 passes on the same engine that was never "broke in".

So if i drive my car around for a week or so being nice to it i should be all set?

ernie has the real life break in procedure. I have never done much more than run the engine to full temp, drain the oil, replace with new oil, check all connections, and then go racing. it is more important to make sure oil and water temps are up to operating levels before going onto the track.
