breaking in a new bridgeport
Hello folks,
I got a new 12a bridgeport on the way and wanted to solicit you on how you break in a new motor. What I plan on doing is: Castrol 10w30 NGK B9EV plugs gapped to 25 idle it for half hour. shut off and let seals cool. idle it for another half hour and cool. idle to 1500 for 1/2 hr and cool idle 2000 for 1/2 hr and cool idle 2500 for 1/2 hr and cool idle 3000 for 1/2 hr and cool then take it to the chassis dyno and follow the Mazdaspeed guidelines for breaking it in. Sound correct? Did I miss anything? Brad |
use a fan on the radiator, release the coolant pressure as soon as you shut it off, and you'll be good.

what good would relieving coolant pressure do? that's generally a no-no, as if the coolant's boiling point drops below the temp. of the metal in the engine, you can get hot spots and uneven metal temps, generally a Bad Thing.

When breaking in a new engine you generally don't want to stay at the same RPM for an extended period of time. Fluctuating the RPM up until a given RPM, like 3000, is probably going to be optimal. You ought to see if you can get a copy of what Mazda recommends for break-in on their remans and go from there.
As for releasing the pressure on the coolant system, I think I would stray away from that idea. Good luck. Kyle |

remember that a chunk of the inner
"o"ring is missing. coolant like anything else will find the path of least resistance. think about it. |
Not all bridge port engines have cut water seals. Most don't, only J-bridge and Monster Bridge engines have cut water seals. Normal bridge and small-relief bridges leave the water seal intact.
Given that this is the Race section, and he's in the US, I'd *assume* that the engine was for SCCA events. The SCCA considers any relieving of the rotor housing to be a "peripheral port" since part of the intake flow goes through the rotor housing. And they only allow MFR peripheral port housings... |
your right, i thought this was the "RACE"
section, no mini ports. i hope the scca dosen't find out that all the mazdas in gt2/3, csr, and fa are all using pp engines. |
I need to brake in my too
MY PP FC, is done. going to brake in tomorrow. should I change new plugs and 20W racing oil(mazdaspeed recomand) since I dont have dyno and dont know where is good one in SCA. I will try to brake in street. should I brake in all free way mile or find some up hill section to do it?
